Alex Jones in a new scandal involving a threat to go after a member of Congress

Update Alex Jones is in a new scandal involving the threat of a member of congress Adam Schiff in a rant. Wow this is in the middle of a Youtube boycott threat and Infowars was cited for spreading hate speech and fake news that lead to advertisers pulling out of Youtube. Wait one second if Alex Jones has radio affiliates at play here how come we never heard of anything of advertisers threatening to boycott the affiliates that air Alex Jones talk radio edition. So far only Youtube and Google has responded to the Boycott to advertisers. Note Im in a split media market like Sacramento and San Francisco and we do not even have Alex Jones on any local radio stations in the Bay or Sacramento Valley at this time. The first time I ever know this Infowars group ever existed was that it was trending on Youtube. How are Alex Jones ratings in cities where he is really on the air?

Updated | Law enforcement officials are not saying whether they will charge broadcaster Alex Jones, the right-wing conspiracy theorist ally of President Donald Trump, for publicly threatening to “beat” Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and telling Schiff to “fill your hand”—a reference to taking up a pistol.

But, says an attorney with expertise in federal law, Jones’s threats appear to break a federal law, U.S. Code Title 18, Section 115, which makes it illegal to threaten to assault a U.S. official and provides a penalty of up to six years in prison.

“I do think that the combination of Jones’s comments would amount to a threat,” says Amanda Berman, director of legal affairs with Lawfare Project, a consortium of experts on national security law. “It seems to be a clear provocation. Ultimately, the question would have to be put to a judge or jury, but I think there is a legal basis for a conviction based on Jones’s threat, which was made ‘with intent to impede, intimidate or interfere’ with Congressman Schiff’s exercise of his duties as the ranking member of the committee investigating the connection between the Trump campaign/administration and the Russians.”

Schiff likely became a Jones target because he is the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, which is investigating possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Schiff has said there is “more than circumstantial” evidence of collusion between Trump associates and Russia.

Jones is based in Austin, Texas, and Texas state law also forbids threats against public officials.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas did not return calls and emailed requests for comment.

Uploaded March 30 under the headline Watch Live Now! Plan to Assassinate Trump Leaked, the video involved an interview with Republican operative Roger Stone, a sometime Trump adviser. Jones launched into his rant against Schiff while talking with Stone, but the canny operative—who has been accused of having Russia ties himself—did not take the bait, remarking: “I’m not going to go there.”

It’s not clear whether the video was broadcast on the air before being posted to YouTube: If so, that would bring it under the purview of the Federal Communications Commission. Jones’s Infowars program is carried by Genesis Communications Network, which produces 75 shows aired on 830 radio stations.

In addition to threatening to “beat” Schiff, the rant was also explicitly anti-gay. Neither Schiff’s office nor the FCC has returned calls for comment. The CEO and founder of Genesis Communications, Ted Anderson, also has not responded to messages.

The video was brought to Newsweek’s attention by Media Matters, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit that monitors Jones’s shows.

Jones’s broadcast style serves up class resentment and paranoia, and he sometimes literally growls with rage about “globalists.” The Southern Poverty Law Center has called him “the most prolific conspiracy theorist in America.” Among the outlandish ideas he frequently discusses are that the 9/11 terrorist attacks were an inside job and that the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was a faked false-flag operation aimed at taking away Americans’ gun rights. Until he publicly recanted recently, he was also a purveyor of “Pizzagate,” the claim that Hillary Clinton and other Democrats engaged in child abuse in the basement of a popular Washington, D.C., pizza parlor. Acting on that theory, a North Carolina man shot up the restaurant with an assault rifle in December after driving to the nation’s capital to “self-investigate.”

The rise of Trump has not soothed Jones’s excitable tendencies. On the contrary: He has dialed it up a few notches, going so far as urging Trump to use violence against his opponents.

In February, the online advertiser AdRoll suspended its relationship with Infowars. Kellogg has also stopped its advertising, citing hate speech. Jones is still supported by Google via its YouTube Partners Program, which helps users connect with advertisers, and other advertisers include PlayStation and Trivago.

how come we never heard of anything of advertisers threatening to boycott the affiliates that air Alex Jones talk radio edition.

Probably because they're not buying particular shows or stations, but rather a bulk audience number derived from multiple stations and shows.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but WMQM, the station that Alex Jones is on in Memphis, is a dollar a holler outfit that will let on any crackpot that flashes enough money in the station management's faces, so they could care less about what Jones does as long as he pays for the airtime. I'd guess that a lot of the stations that he's on other places are the same way.

Jones does get those dollar a holler sorts and those 'patriot' stations but he is on, for example, KLBJ in Austin on the weekend (or was, which is where I heard of him). My thinking is advertisers have not squawked because they're buying a discounted percentage of weekend avails and could care less when they play. Alex Jones has his own accounts, typically the sort that realize they core customer is his listener. All this publicity must be making him happy as everyone that loves or hates him flocks to hear what he has to say.

For those of you wondering who voted for Adam Schiff into congress its Los Angeles area residents. However if you look at Alex Jones radio affiliates list Los Angeles is not included according to GCN. All Congress member Adam Schiff can do is wait for the fall out of the Youtube boycott be resolved and how Google partners respond to the fake news/hate speech and Russia connection allegations of Infowars and its staff to be dealt with accordingly.

New scandal Alex Jones is in a custody dispute with his wife over the kids. Damn Alex Jones has opened himself to other lawsuits more specifically the Pizzagate lawsuit that's uncertain for now until the custody lawsuit is resolved for unrelated reasons but the the center of the scandal is Alex Jones and his staff members. Apparently Alex Jones told his lawyers he is a "Performance artist" as a ploy to get custody of his kids.

Damn if Alex Jones "Scandals" are only an act How the hell is the public supposed to know about that? Now that a child custody battle is at play. Note for those of you that have the radio edition of Infowars has there been threats to boycott the stations that air his show? I ask this because how come when Fox News is in a scandal its easier to call for advertisers to boycott Fox News. But when Alex Jones is in multiple scandals at the same time I don't hear any boycott threats to him and Infowars. I noticed only Youtube and facebook are facing the backlash here over how they deal with Alex Jones and Infowars. Alex Jones is the reason why there was a threat of a Youtube Boycott a few weeks ago. I heard of Comet Ping Pong making threats to sue Alex Jones and his staff at one point but thats being delayed because of this new lawsuit.

You have to wonder how Edgar Welch feels about that. He’s the North Carolina man who shot up a pizzeria in Washington, D.C., last year because he believed a tale spread by Jones and others that it was the headquarters of a child-molestation ring run by Hillary Clinton. He faces the possibility of many years in prison when he is sentenced in June.

You have to wonder how Leonard Pozner feels about it, too. He’s been getting death threats and has been challenged to prove that his son Noah ever existed, all because Jones and others claimed the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in which Noah and 25 others were killed, was a hoax. He faces the rest of his life without his child.

Finally, you have to wonder how Donald Trump feels about it. The so-called president has professed admiration for Jones and has built his worldview, such as it is, around a Jones-like belief that a tangled skein of conspiracies explains virtually everything in life that refutes, frustrates, or embarrasses him. We face four years of him steering the ship of state.

As regards the lawyer’s claim, there are two possible conclusions. One: He’s telling the truth, and Jones never believed the garbage he vomited. Or two: Jones is trying to hoax the court.

Not that it matters which is true. Either way, Jones has hurt people and ruined lives. Either way, he has helped damage the country.

We now live in the United States of Confusion, a nation of alternative realities and alternative facts where reasoned and informed political debate are all but impossible because too many of us prize ideology above factuality. A coterie of media charlatans eagerly caters to that intellectual flaccidity, and Jones was loud among them, so there is a certain satisfaction in seeing him revealed as a hypocrite and fraud.

But the feeling is fleeting. After all, given the gullibility of his followers, there is no reason to believe this will be the end of him — or what he represents.

Jones fills a need. Frightened people seek easy ways to comprehend the big, bad world. Alternative facts and realities are among the easiest. And never mind the damage that is done, the ignorance that is fostered, the pain that is caused.

Meantime the rest of us — dare we still say, “most” of us? — muddle through actual reality using actual facts to confront the big, bad world. It is not easy

Alex Jones may sound like a nutcase but he doesn't hold a monopoly on conspiracy theories. There are plenty of those to go around to fit all political biases.

True too but Kyle Clark of KUSA/Tegna is apparently responding to a rant that sounds like something straight outta Infowars and allies.
