Alex Langer to Take WRKO Head-On

BREAKING NEWS...(WBIX)'s Alex Langer is going to compete head-on with WRKO.
Langer is about to get back his old station and has committed to spending lots of money to compete with WRKO. He is planning a big advertising campaign to promote the New station and will bring back different call letters.

Langer has been negotiating with some big name local talk hosts and is putting together a local talk format which will take down some more audience from RKO.

Langer is reported to have some other surprises in store for his new venture.

(EYE think this time Langer has hooked the Big One)

alex langer is one of the good guys; an independent instead of a conglomerate.

more power to him.

I wonder if he will bring back Gene Burns again?
even though he would based in S.F. he is still better than Rush and B.O.

WMEX again? (I know WMEX-fm is in NH).
So if they're aren't keeping WBIX it won't be "BIX-106"...

Was tried before at 1200 IIRC (Gene Burns) and 1060 (WMEX--Jerry
Williams, Marge Clapprood, even Burns for a time). Was Marge's sudden exit from 'RKO a sign she's moving to 1060?

Hmm! Wonder if he can bring some syndie shows like Glenn Beck
and Phil Hendrie aboard, too?

speaking of power 1060's day signal is pretty good but I know they gotta
power down or switch direction at night due to KYW

KGO (AM 810 S.F.)
airs Gene Burns
Tuesday - Thursday: 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
So if they do a live feed we're talking 10p-1a...

By "the Big One" I would assume you mean Gene Burns. This would indeed be great news and I hope that it is true.

For some reason, WRKO and most of the talk stations in the US, feel that they need to cater to the lowest common denominator. As I remember back in the 80's when WRKO had a more intelligent format, they were doing quite well.

Let's hope for the best.

I don't think that the WMEX calls would make a return. Though, after WBEN 930 in Buffalo allowed WMWX 95.7 Philadelphia to become WBEN-FM, it's possible.

Regarding WBIX, that's a pretty unlucky set of call letters. First, it was forgettable Hot AC "Big 105" in New York. That station lasted a year before it fell victim to Jammin' Oldies as "Jammin' 105" WTJM. Then, the calls moved to Boston, and we all know what happened here. Googling for WBIX brings up numerous articles surrounding the demise of the Business format, and it would be nearly impossible to reinvent those calls in this market.

Similarly, WMEX was abused through numerous re-inventions (1150 as oldies, 1150 as business, 1150 as brokered, 1060 as talk, was there another?) before the letters ran away to refuge in New Hampshire. None of these re-creations captured the essence of the original station on 1510, and were another WMEX created in Boston, it would almost certainly fail as well. Plus, add to it that the audience that grew up with 1510 is getting older, and therefore smaller, and so the name's significance would be minimal.

The only thing consistent about Alex's stewardship of 1060 since he was drawn back into the management of the station by the court-appointed receiver, David Vicinanzo, has been his inconsistency. First he announced the end of the business format. He was quoted as saying that the station would fetch a much higher price from a buyer if it had a format with broader appeal. Only a few weeks later, however, business (a combination of bartered and brokered) was back coupled with the third-rate product of the networks that Langer owns or controls. Quite possibly, the brokered "business" format was breaking even. Langer's ability to show prospective advertisers on his networks that a "major station" in Market #5 was carrying not only the network spots but also the network programming undoubtedly helped to limit the amount Langer had to shell out of his own pocket to keep the station on the air. Now, it appears he is going back to his original plan. Dress the station up for a sale by bringing in some well-known talent.

My guess would be Burns, Clapprood, and maybe Whitley. Maybe if our friend with all the screen names who used to produce Jerry Williams' show has a large enough library of tapes, Langer can also bring back The Dean. Getting Williams to do a show "live" more than a year after his death would be a great surprise, wouldn't it? If he can do that with Williams, maybe he could also do it Brudnoy.

The more I think about Whitley and 1060, the more likely the idea sounds. Remember that Whitley LMAed the station from John Garabedian not long after its big (and ultimately failed) power increase CA 1982 or 1983. Whitley might be tempted to try to prove that if the technical problems had been worked out a quarter of a century ago (as they have been now), he could have made the station successful back then. I think he may be just enough of an egotost to feel that he still has something to prove. Could the new calls be the ones that Whitley used back then--WTTP? (Stood for "touch... talk... people.") That would not make the folks at Salem (WTTT) very happy, but under today's FCC rules, I don't think they get to vote.

Well, the oldies one tried briefly. It had the music, the jingles (at times), and at times, some good air talent who knew their oldies including Quentin Migliori, Ron Scott, Little Walter, Jim Sands, Jack Nash, Gary James, Tom Saint-John, Bob O'Brien, Chuck Stevens, Scott Roberts, and many others (including some weekend overnight and fill-in guy who called himself Eric Parker for a short time...)

Unfortunately, it was sort of sabotaged by replacing good jocks with boring oldies satellite feeds, generic playlists, etc... and it couldn't have survived against WODS for long anyway.

Also, I do recall another transitional incarnation of the WMEX call letters. After Greater Media let them go, Dennis Jackson "parked" WMEX-FM on his classical station in Westport, NY for a little while until he could get them assigned to his Farmington (Rochester) NH oldies station (then WZEN).

The classical station shortly thereafter became WCLX-FM, a classic album rock station serving the Burlington, VT market from across the Champlain in Westport.

ABOVE POST JUST A TROLL - BIX stays business

Ignore the troll. Checked it out. BIX is staying business/brokered.

Gene Burns would leave primetime on KGO? No.

EYE think you jest. April Fools Day was a few months ago. Sadly, Langer lost all credibilty when he sold his soul to Brad Bleidt.

A dead Jerry Williams is better than 95% of the current WRKO current talk frauds.

Langer had Gene Burns in 2000 and let him go for Bonnie Bleidt. What more can you say. . .

Just a suggestion and perhaps few will remember but the WCOP calls that used to reside on 1150 decades ago are currently available.
______________

One thing is for sure, it shows how badly there needs to be a talk station that does local. Boston has never historically been a city that likes wall to wall national syndicated programming. It's rich with talent and ideas and that's what WRKO apparently has forgotten over the years (or, Entercom never figured out when they came to this market).
______________
