Alex Trebek, Game Show host, at 80

Alex Trebek, best known for hosting Jeopardy! for over 30 years, died this morning at age 80, according to a tweet from the Jeopardy! twitter account. Trebek had been fighting Pancreatic cancer for some time, but had been able to begin filming season 37.

Very sad news, even if we were expecting it. In a way, it seemed he might beat the odds. Surprising to read in the TMZ article that Trebek was in the studio with Jeopardy production as recently as October 29th. His shows will air through December 25th.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

Lord, please get us to 2021 in one piece! We've had enough of this awful year!

RIP forever and ever Alex. May you enjoy your eternal time up in the game show in the sky. :-(

Remembrance of singer Don McLean, who performed at Alex Trebek's final Christmas party last year:

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Music icon Don McLean performed for Alex Trebek’s final Christmas party at the request of Alex Trebek. Don reflects on that time spent with Alex:

“Alex asked if I would come and sing for him and his Jeopardy family at his annual Christmas party last year. I was on his “bucket” list he told me. It was at a lovely Italian restaurant near his home. We planned a show and he apologized for his red complexion which he said the medication gave him. “I look like an Indian in a John Wayne movie,” Alex told me. It was a joyous and sad occasion and I was very touched that my music was that important to him. There was not the slightest hint of self-pity or weakness in this man. He was elegant and dignified as you saw him on television. Old school for sure and someone who we all can learn from. I thought of him often afterward and I’ll think of him in the future and maybe try to be a little more like him.” -- Don McLean, Songwriter Hall of Fame member and Grammy honoree.

ABC will air an hour-long retrospective on Trebek's life tonight at 10 ET, replacing the previously scheduled "Card Sharks".

Jeopardy! is putting up a tribute to Alex at the end of each episode, but nothing at the beginning of the show. Fox 17 here in Nashville has also been running crawls across the bottom of the screen during the show.

On Monday, producer Mike Richards did an on-stage tribute to Alex. This weekend, Game Show Network and Buzzr will be doing marathons of Alex. GSN will run a six-hour Jeopardy! marathon while Buzzr will start with three episodes of Card Sharks (where Alex was a celebrity contestant playing for charity), nine hours of Classic Concentration and topped off with a 1991 To Tell The Truth episode he hosted.

SNL at 10:00 inserted a scene with Alex, Will Ferrell as Alex and Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery, but it was clearly not part of the original episode. Sean, Burt Reynolds and Martin Short as Jerry Lewis were in the sketch that preceded it.

And on the screen afterward it said "The greatest game show host of all time" or something close to that, and "Who is Alex Trebek?"

Production on Jeopardy! will resume Monday, November 30 using a series of interim hosts. Ken Jennings will be the first. They will also hold off on the last two weeks of Alex's shows until after Christmas because of possible pre-emptions due to sports events, mainly on ABC stations. Those two weeks will be a series of "best of Alex" episodes.
