I don't usually comment on these matters. Normally, I just lurk on these boards and watch with interest as many of you make your observations and comments. Then I sit back and smile at how much some of you claim to know.
I find it very interesting, not only on this board, but many others that have a station in it's town that has flipped to the "Jack" or "Bob" or "Dave" format.
You sit back and say "It will never work" or "It's just the format du joir."
My question is this...how many of you have worked this format? How many
of you have sat in on strategic planning meetings and looked at the research to see its viability? How many of you have been present when the music test was conducted? Have any of you looked at the break-outs once the ratings have come in? I would venture to say that the answer to ALL of my questions is either a flat NO or perhaps less than 1%.
Obviously the format has legs or it wouldn't be doing so well in Dallas. It must be doing ok in Denver too. Wow, look at that, Atlanta must think it's doing alright. Now before you say, "Yeah, sure those are all major markets"
keep in mind, listening habits may vary from market to market, but people are people. If they like a song they hear, they'll continue to listen.
A really good PD once told me that if both stations are even...good talent, solid promotions, great imaging...it will come down to is the song on station A, better than the song on station B...if not, Station A wins.
If Jack, or Bob, or Dave has a 1,000+ library then I have a feeling there will be some familiar songs. The average listener doesn't sit there, listening to their radio and say "OOOOOh...what a train wreck. Did you hear that Jim...they played Depech Mode into the Pointer Sisters." The fact is they don't care, as long as they like Depeche Mode AND The Pointer Sisters.
Think about your own CD collection. I don't know about you, but on Sunday mornig when I get up and make myself breakfast I load up the changer with a BIG variety...Eagles, Sade, John Mayer, Toby Keith, Stones, FW Mac.
Aren't most of us the same people who complain about formats/play lists being to tight and narrow? So now that something old is something new again...something that sounds a LOT like 1970s Top 40 if you ask me...why do we sit in judgement before it's had a chance to prove it's self in some of these other markets?
