Alice 103-3...I mean MP 103

Instead of this "niche" Jack format they should of created a format of there own. During my time @ Alice the most fun and most interactive days was when we did the "Vintage Alice Weekends". A Vintage Alice format could last just as long as this "Jack" craze sweeping the nation.

Any Thoughts?

Thoughts? Hmmm...well here are mine. First, I knew this was going to happen. A while back their PD posed a question on this very board asking about the viability of a Jack format in the Champlain Valley. The majority of the respondents stated the fact (and the truth) that this format will not last. It will not last nationally and will not last in the Champlain Valley or anywhere else. But was it an unwise move for them to do this? I don't think it was. In fact I think it was a brilliant move.

While I am not a big fan of the name (I thought the name was going to be "Sam" in honor of Champlain), I think this format will be an initial success. It is a very interesting format that is sweeping the country. A format that is popular with the listeners (for now). The big downfall is that the "Jack" format is a "fad format", a novelty. Like all fad formats, the novelty will wear off. Who knows, myself and many other industry folks could be wrong and in the future all radio station could be "Jack".

I dont't think NEBCO is planning on this station to be a long-term thing. NEBCO is going to get all the life they can out of this format and then switch to something else. What other choice do they have? There is no way this format is long term (IMHO). They saw an opportunity and they jumped at it. Very smart on their part I think.

Congrats! I can't wait to get to the Valley to tune in. Rest in peace Alice.

I spoke to someone in the market yesterday and they said that it was listenable... The person went on to say that Alice was completely unlistenable prior to the flip.

MP103? Some sorta play on MP3?

I doubt she will last... Sorry, that's just the way it is. Jack works in Canada, where it was started, due to the CRTC regs on having to play X% of Canadian artists. Without those restrictions mucking up stations over here, the draw won't continue. There's actually a string on this board's programming section that has links to charts on TSL of people listening to a jack formast station.

All depends how they promote it (if they do at all). They weren't doing much as Alice so why not try this. The Alice jocks always sounded very green and the formatics were mediocre. This might work for awhile but the new name MP103 is awful. Why not go with a more common name for the fomat and use both EXACT frequencies? I know this is a take-off on MP3 but it's reaching much too far.

In reality...if they had stayed with the soft AC they originally started with they probably would have had a 6 or 7 share in the market by now. You gotta spend some money to make money Mr. Silberberg!

Did they fire all the jocks - or are they still there?

At 5:38am today, WXAL & WLKC (Alice 103.3 and 93.7)/Burlington-Plattsburgh, VT-NY left the Hot AC format to join the Jack, Bob and Dave stations in the new Adult Hits format. The stations will call themselves "MP 103" (a play on MP3) and will continue to broadcast on 93.7. Though their positioning statement is, "'80s-based classic hits," MP 103 will feature songs from the late '60s to today.

PD Scott McKenzie tells R&R, "It's the playlist that fits best in the market right now. Thankfully, the entire Alice staff remains in place. It's not train-wreck radio, but we are mixing it up, playing everything from AC/DC to Hot Chocolate."

MP 103 currently has 1,400 songs in its library, with hopes to get it up to 4,000 by year's end. They launched this morning with Steve Miller's "Fly Like an

I agree. I think soft AC is sorely missing in the market. I too believe if they had stayed with the format it would have paid off. While under the soft AC format the station was the best it ever sounded with decent jocks (Gail, Franny etc.)

I don't usually comment on these matters. Normally, I just lurk on these boards and watch with interest as many of you make your observations and comments. Then I sit back and smile at how much some of you claim to know.

I find it very interesting, not only on this board, but many others that have a station in it's town that has flipped to the "Jack" or "Bob" or "Dave" format.
You sit back and say "It will never work" or "It's just the format du joir."

My question is this...how many of you have worked this format? How many
of you have sat in on strategic planning meetings and looked at the research to see its viability? How many of you have been present when the music test was conducted? Have any of you looked at the break-outs once the ratings have come in? I would venture to say that the answer to ALL of my questions is either a flat NO or perhaps less than 1%.

Obviously the format has legs or it wouldn't be doing so well in Dallas. It must be doing ok in Denver too. Wow, look at that, Atlanta must think it's doing alright. Now before you say, "Yeah, sure those are all major markets"
keep in mind, listening habits may vary from market to market, but people are people. If they like a song they hear, they'll continue to listen.

A really good PD once told me that if both stations are even...good talent, solid promotions, great imaging...it will come down to is the song on station A, better than the song on station B...if not, Station A wins.

If Jack, or Bob, or Dave has a 1,000+ library then I have a feeling there will be some familiar songs. The average listener doesn't sit there, listening to their radio and say "OOOOOh...what a train wreck. Did you hear that Jim...they played Depech Mode into the Pointer Sisters." The fact is they don't care, as long as they like Depeche Mode AND The Pointer Sisters.

Think about your own CD collection. I don't know about you, but on Sunday mornig when I get up and make myself breakfast I load up the changer with a BIG variety...Eagles, Sade, John Mayer, Toby Keith, Stones, FW Mac.

Aren't most of us the same people who complain about formats/play lists being to tight and narrow? So now that something old is something new again...something that sounds a LOT like 1970s Top 40 if you ask me...why do we sit in judgement before it's had a chance to prove it's self in some of these other markets?

The music part of the idea is great. It's an idea whose time came a long time ago. The problem is that almost all of these stations are taking jobs away from people in the communities which they serve with their PUBLIC license. Personally, I like to listen to these stations (and I'm sure the audience likes them too). But it's the capricous dumping of salaries that seems to irritate radio people. It sucks to be out of work. We all feel bad for these laid-off jocks.

Ya right. Keep dreaming. Thank God for Media base. That way you can look at and not listen to bad radio

Was that necessary? He's just trying to earn a paycheck like everybody else. You're right about Mediabase though.<P ID="signature">______________
