Alice Cooper Nights

Anyone here listen to this much? I caught it last week while listening to WIMZ's A to Z thing and really liked it. He is playing what WIMZ ought to be playing more of regularly. Last night I actually heard "Ready for Love" by Mott The Hoople! I think this is the first time I've heard this on the radio since my progressive rock days in Memphis listening to FM100.

I think the syndicated shows are better that what usually airs on the stations that carry them. For example, "Flashback" on WQUT on Sunday nights plays some great tracks, and when 95.7/106.7 had the oldies format, the Tom Kent program evenings had great variety of 60's and 70's songs that NEVER got played on the station otherwise.

I am really enjoying the Alice Cooper show on WIMZ. You're right, he does blow the dust off alot of great classics that haven't been played on Knoxville radio in probably 25 years. I'm glad to hear someone besides me has heard Mott The Hoople's version of Ready For Love. Their version is so awesome compared to Bad Company's version. Actually, Mick Ralphs was a member of Mott The Hoope back when they did "Ready For Love" on the All The Young Dudes album in '71. He left Mott The Hoople in '73 to join up with the newly formed Bad Company. "Ready For Love" was his song, so he took it with him to Bad Company and they re-done it on their debut album in 73. The Hoople's version has alot more lyrics and longer instrumentals which are just nothing short of amazing! Alice does an unbeleivable job doing his show. He's not afraid to go deep into the 60's and 70's and the stories he tells behind those songs makes them all the more interesting. It's cool hearing this from a man that was there right in the heart of the music during it's most creative time! Mott The Hoople was an awesome group that deserves atleast a little airtime. But, that's like Janis Joplin also - the mother of Rock N Roll. She hardly ever gets any air time and man, she was a major player in the late 60's. I've also heard Brownsville Station's original version of "Smokin In The Boy's Room" on Alice Cooper's show too. A regular WIMZ listener would think that Motley Crue was the only one doing that song.

We've had Tom Kent on twice here in Knoxville. The first time was back when 93.1 went disco on us and operated under the name "Cool 93.1." He only came on Saturday afternoons though. He was on about 6 months then the station changed formats and his show was dumped. Then Oldies 95/106 picked him up and then they too changed formats and dumped him again. He did a good job keeping his show fresh and interesting. I think he would have fit in really well if Jack would have kept him when they changed from Oldies. He played alot of the same music and it would satisfy the Jack listeners' cravings to hear a regular human DJ on the station.

I am an Alice Cooper diehard so I am bias. I have been a fan of his. I love the classic old material but I like his more recent albums even better! Unfortunately Memphis does not carry the show so I have to listen online but he plays great deep cuts and is a great storyteller. Long live the Coop!

Can't wait for his new album next year.

Well normally I'd say no, I hate this show and it shouldn't be replacing a local jock. But when the music programming is far better than your typical WINZ snooze-fest, I guess I'll have to join the crowd and be an Alice cheerleader too.

Oh yeah.. Sandscott... I lived in Memphis last year and Alice Cooper was on every night on 98.1 The Max. I assume they still air it.

I have to agree with all of you on Alice Cooper! He is awesome and it is amazing to hear the stories he tells. This is a man that has met almost everyone that shaped rock back in the early days. Another thing. I almost fell over when I heard you all talking about Mott The Hoople's version of Ready For Love! I actually played that whole album this past weekend. It was on the "All The Young Dudes" album. I called WIMZ once asking to hear their version and the DJ on the air at that time didn't even know who Mott The Hoople was! But yeah, that version is awesome...and it's got more lyrics then Bad Co's version and the guitar work at the end of the song is amazing too. It does deserve a little airplay. I have noticed that WIMZ has added a little variety to their playlist. I actually heard "Whiter Shade Of Pale" by Procol Harum on there and "Time Of The Season" by the Zombies....and this was during the weekdays added into their normal playlist. Jay McDaniel - their night chick - even played "So Into You" by the Atlanta Rythmn Section a while back.

I listen to the show from time to time. I think he's a very good story teller, comes across very real too. I'm only familiar with about 70% of the music, but I'm not the bullseye of the target demo LOL.

It's definitely a nice change-of-pace specialty show on WIMZ.

Hopefully their sales department actually sells it at a premium and turns this good programming into an actual revenue generator.

Isn't Alice Cooper coming to Knoxville in concert? Or did that recently happen?

Alice was here a few weeks ago over at the Tennessee Theater. I went and saw him and the guy can still rock - and sounds great! Alot of the old rockers try to come back and go on tour and they just sound awful - way past their prime and in those cases it's best for them to either lip synch their stuff and just stay out fo the spotlight and let us remember the jewels they left us just like they were. Alice sure isn't one of those guys. He's got a long way to go before he's ready to call it quits. While we're on the subject of Alice...does anyone remember the old vinyl copy of the School's Out album. I found a copy a while back at a yard sale for 25 cents. The cardboard album jacket folds out to look like a school desk. The album art is of a school desk too. You lift up the "lid of the desk" and the record is wrapped in a pair of paper panties. Cool packaging like that is something you just can't do with cd's.

Yep - I remember it well. My sister had a copy of that album bought when it came out. I had the "Billion Dollar Babies" album jacket which folded open like a wallet. You're right - lots of 60's and 70's LP's had great innovative covers. "Sticky Fingers" by the Stones is another that comes to mind.
