Alice... remember Alice?

Anyone know what stations are playing the traditional Alice's Restaurant along with the 8 by 10 color glossy photographs and at what times?

How does one play an 8-by-10 glossy on the radio?

Five years ago Thanksgiving, I posted this:

Scanning the dial on Thanksgiving at noontime while driving through Cambridge, Allston and Brighton, I heard the following stations all playing Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant" at about the same time:

91.9 WUMB Boston
92.5 WXRV Haverhill
93.7 WMKK Lawrence (slightly pitched up, Arlo the chipmunk)
94.1 WHJY Providence, RI
100.3 WHEB Portsmouth, NH
100.7 WZLX Boston
102.1 WSAK Hampton, NH (//105.3 WSHK Kittery, ME)
104.1 WBCN Boston
105.7 WROR Boston

95.9 WATD Marshfield played it shortly after 1 PM.

I was told by another poster in that thread that 101.5 WWBB and 95.5 WBRU in Providence also played it at noon. I was too close to the Boston area adjacents to get them.

On HD radio, 100.7 HD3 "WBCN Free Form Rock" (formerly called "Free Form BCN") will also be playing it Thursday at noon.

WMWM has played it in the past right after the Salem/Beverly High football classic which we
are broadcasting again this yr. Not sure if it will be done this yr too

WXRB-FM 95.1, Dudley/Webster, MA (http://wxrbfm.com) will be airing the "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" on Thursday at noon (Eastern), with a second helping at 3:00 PM (Eastern). It's an 'XRB tradition. ENJOY!

It's too bad some station doesn't adopt a more interesting (IMO) musical Thanksgiving tradition and play the Last Waltz soundtrack (or even the whole box set) in its entirety.

If the station also streams online, doing that may be in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act unless necessary permission is secured from the music publishers/licensees.

I actually let the song go this year.

As 40-year Heritage Rock 25-54 male targeted station, I had to ask myself if a 42-year old guy could relate to the song.

How much relevance does an anti war protest song, by an artist we not only do not play, but most of my audience has no knowledge of, from the Vietnam era, truly have?

And does the song reinforce a music image we no longer wish to be defined by?

What we chose to do was direct the audience to a place where they could view a live performance of the song by Arlo if they so choose.

Alice doesn't live here anymore.

Paul first I must say I'm shocked!! Second all i have to say is you can never come home. Arlo is a local icon with a song or several songs that are all about Massachusetts itself. Even discounting that suckie song called "Massachusetts" and don't get me wrong I don't even get the folk crap!.... But the fact that you can actually think you can blow that song off means you forget your roots and you are destined to die in middle America were the national drug is crack! Happy Thanksgiving Paul and stay away from the group W bench! I just hope Oedi never sees this post.... Yikes you used to be one of us.

I believe we're reading into it just a liiittle too much. 1. it's funny...2. It's Thanksgiving. 3. Breaking traditions isn't cool. Sounds like a typical corporate minded thought though. Nuffsaid.

Just think for a moment...Handel's 'Messiah' is played every year by orchestra's all over the world around Christmas time....nobody today was alive when it was first written/performed, yet there it is year after year. As traditions go, Alice has been played every Thanksgiving for as far back as I can remember...I think WBCN started the tradition...my son (13) asked me yesterday..."what station is playing Alice's Restaurant?"....he had heard it a couple of years ago and he is hooked. So there you go!

Much as I respect your opinion, Paul, this song is a tradition for Thanksgiving. Even the college stations still run "Alice's Restaurant" every year during the week of Thanksgiving. It's timeless. Even my daughter (who is in college) loves the song, including the updated version of it. I'm kind of surprised that you would not bring this tradition to your station. That's too bad. :(

My station runs "Alice's Restaurant" twice every Thanksgiving. And we are an oldies station.
