All #1 of Sixties and Seventies

I have been visiting home [sacramento] and today on the way to the airport I heard Khits playing nothing but #1 songs AtoZ. A lot of music I haven't heard on radio in a long time.

Several classic hits stations are doing this feature. Some did it over Labor Day Weekend, WCBS just ended theirs Thanksgiving weekend, so it seems to be a trend in the making.

The only thing that may be a negative, is that many songs from pre-64 are being skipped, even though they made #1. "Moody River" by Pat Boone was skipped on WCBS, but "Lion Sleeps Tonight" was not, both from 1961.

call me crazy, but, isn't that what all these tired Oldies Stations accross the country play Is #1's A_Z..... and about the only #1 that doesn't get played Is "Don't " by Elvis ( and yes, you may be right about "Moody river", I don't ever hear that anymore).......God If I never hear Wipeout and Satisfaction again, it won't be too soon, thank you.

Classic Hits stations haven't played Wipe Out in years. Those #1 A to Z weekends usually start at the Beatle years (1964)for demographic reasons. When we did it in Dallas/Ft. Worth a few weeks ago, we played Hello Dolly, Everybody Loves Somebody, Honey and Harper Valley PTA! (lol)....Also Convoy and Disco Duck! I think that's plenty deep enough for a station that relies on ratings. ;D

Eh, I don't know If I believe that Classic Stations don't play Wipeout, Wild Thing and Satisfaction after all Wipeout re-charted in 1966. Programmers invariably play it way too safe, not to program Wipeout. Actually you should creat a pool that you visit periodically with those songs you mentioned and other songs (*Love is Blue, Classical Gas, Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, Strangers in the night, and on and on) that eventaully ended up on AC format stations...you see. You-all forget we first heard these songs on TOP 40 radio1955-1965 that was all inclusive....1955 was a reference point, I realize classic Hits format is non-50's,

I can tell you, from the music monitors I've seen, and first hand knowledge about what the CBS stations play, Wipe Out is no longer in rotation and hasn't been for quite a while. That's not to say that it won't pop up on a feature now and then. MOR songs that also started life on Top 40 have never really been embraced by the format,WITH a few exceptions: Lenny Welch, Percy Faith (Summer Place), there are more, but they are mostly from the pre-Beatle era. Even 10-15 years ago, it was more Paul Revere and the Raiders and less Bert Kaempfert. That's because many of those songs didn't remotely qualify as good time oldies or rock and roll. We know from perceptual research that 'younger' folks (40 +) like, and will tolerate more of an edge to their music. Think "Sweet Home Alabama". It's nearly impossible to get 45 to 54 year olds to listen when you're playing music that's around 50 years old. And if you DO play one once in a while, it had better not be Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte or I Remember You.

I was giving Kudos that your station dipped into the MOR cuts you played (albeit on a periodic basis) and wished that more stations did that...I certainly wouldn't listen to a CBS station, i would rather have a colonoscopy..they are Tooooooooooo boring (the CBS stations not the Colonoscopys). Classic Hits and Classics Rock separates the "Sweet Home Alabama's" from the Paul Revere....This part of the country Classic hits radio, (Unfortuneatley) still plays wipeout. To me Classics Hit Format and Oldies format the only difference is less 50's on the Classic Hits Format..everything else is the same. Of course the fact that I'm 64 has alot to do with my taste. i hear what you saying.

What about listening to a CBS station while you're getting a colonoscopy? :D

yes, and while listening to CBS during the colonoscopy I want to hear Pet Clark's "Round Every Corner" not "deadmans curve" ooouuucchh.

Wipeout's comeback record is amazing....1966, 1987 Dancing II and same year Beach Boys with the Fat Boys.....I really like Wipeout, just after 50 years I only want to hear it once every three months not twice a day, Give me the b-side "Surfer Joe". how refreshing would it be to hear "You Showed me " by the tutles rather than Happy Together.....or "Hard To Believe" by the Monkees rather than "Last Train To Deadsville"

I have to tell you guys....and this really happened, and I hope it's not T.M.I. ....two years agao, while having my colonoscopy, just before I went 'to sleep', I noticed that they had K*LUV (my employer and a CBS station) piped in!!! (lol) So, I've actually had the experience described!!

Allow me to chime in. We're not fans of being 'sneaky' to listeners, so we did play every #1 hit from the 60s and 70s -- all 456 of them. In fact, we even played The Twist twice, back-to-back since we're were going A-Z, because it hit #1 on two separate occasions. The list actually included a couple 1959 songs that were released as singles in '59, but didn't hit #1 until 1960.

It was a blast!

Now that's what I call thorough.

Well, let's hope that listening to Classic Hits, while preparing for a colonoscopy, dosen't lead to a "Wipeout"! Yikes! ;D

I can imagine as a colonoscopy is Happening it can be Kind of Drag and you probably hope you don't Tighten Up as the scope does TheTwist through your Long And Winding Road. Some people reporting being a little Dizzy afterwards. Then the doctor says Let's Do It Again next year.

Ok that's enough. I could have said something about the night before when you drink the colon blow and do The Hustle to the bathroom before It's Too Late.

Good one........what I can't figure out is, why the prep is called "'go-litely"... there is a perfect song for this by the Da yoopers..

Other Pet Clark tunes appropriate for a colonoscopy: Dont Sleep in the SUBWAY and Downtown. And let's not forget the Doors, with Break On Through. Then there was Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower. And who could forget the Mills Brothers, Up A Lazy River...

Do you get the feeling we're straying from the thread, just a little?

or The Yardbirds "Over, under, sideways, down" or the who "I can See For Miles" or Duane Eddy "40 miles of Bad Road", finito...The Doors "The End"
