All a stunt to get another station to flip (If so, it has worked)

In another thread 'musicfanpete' theorised that Merlin's plan may have been to get another group owner in the market to blink, and maybe it has worked. CBS has blown up 105.9 to bring WBBM 780 to FM. Did Merlin plan all along to put on an AC/Hot AC type format? By letting it leak out that the format of 101.1 would be 'news' they have already knocked out a competitor (albeit not a ratings winner) now that WCFS is defunct.

This would be the stunt of all stunts.

With the new format 101.1 will sink even lower in ratings. The station sounds terrible. I agree a Hot AC format would bring up ratings.

Too much overthinking--I think.

Yes, more of the same music over and over.... Not a good idea. Deal with it, it's news and give it some time.

Well my reasoning for 101.1 to go AC or Hot AC was due to the fact with that the city's only remaining Hot AC station, the Mix slanting so close to a mainstream CHR sound as of late, there is still room for a "tweener" AC/Hot AC station, or a Modern leaning Hot AC. Also, keep in mind that the reason Fresh 105.9 failed was due to management not allowing their personalities to say much on the air, and being very slow on new music. This gives Merlin Media another incentive to flip to some sort of Hot AC format if they choose to do so. But keep in mind that my theory of this news format being an elaborate stunt was more wild speculation on my part as it is unlikely Randy Michaels would go through all this expense and time to do this. However, I would not be shocked either if it was all a stunt, which means the "real" format should surface this week. :)

Well if this were true (and its not), it was one heck of a successful way for CBS Chicago to convince CBS Corporate that the failing Fresh format that they were saddled with needed to be deleted in favor of WBBM. And, furthermore, to guarantee the success (finally) of the 105.9 frequency. And, to pump up CBS' revenues in a big way going forward.

So, if this were a hoax on the part of Randy Michaels, the folks at CBS should really be buying him one of those Lexus cars with the ribbon on it for Christmas! Of course, now we know it's not a hoax, but they should still consider the Lexus as a thank you..... :D
