All About Stuart!

As a loyal fan of 'TOP 40' radio (I don't like the term 'CHR-POP') I've always wondered how radio stations (past and present) determined a specific numbered caller to win a certain prize.

'Be the 96TH caller right now at 550-9696 to win four tix to see Styx LIVE in concert PLUS ninety-six dollars in cold hard cash to spend any way that you wish. I'll also throw in a hot new 96-X tee shirt for good measure !'

I'm sure that Stuart can help me out with this inquiry. How did you determine back in the day who exactly was the 96TH (or whatever) caller ? Did you answer the telephone 96 times by saying 'You're Caller 1, SORRY !', 'You're Caller 2, SORRY !' ... all the way up to 'You're Caller 96, WHAT'S YOUR NAME ? !'
