"Memphis: Clear Channel Urban Stations Rule

African American targeted stations notched the top five positions 12+ and 25-54 in Memphis this book with CLEAR CHANNEL owning four of them. Meanwhile, FLINN Top 40 WHBQ posted solid gains, while ENTERCOM's recently acquired cluster from CBS is in a rebuild mode.

And where are the Chris Taylor disser's from May 2006? At the crow cafe?

Right on Rob!!!

Chris Taylor probably knows how to construct and execute the format on HBQ as well as or possibly better than most programmers in the country. He finds good talent that is hungry for radio and have yet to be beat down by the corporate giants. I can remember the day when working for Flinn was laughed at, but having seen the blood baths going on in this market and across the country, I am sure that those who once questioned that facilty on Mt. Moriah may be rethinking earlier thoughts. I filled a shift for Chris about a year ago on HBQ, and I asked Joe Mack how he liked for working for Flinn as opposed to one of the larger companies...ie Infinity, Entercom etc. I think he said it best......If you need bumper stickers, you don't have to go through New York red tape...You go to George Flinn and he cuts you a check. Damn, those are the good old days.

Keep up the good work Chris if you are reading this...and congrats on a damn good book!

Let's hope the good doctor doesn't get one of his wild hairs and change the format.

He might be losing his tax breaks now that the signal is not losing money.

Q 107.5 had a great book, no doubt about it. Their problem is that boxcars like Drex and Lugnut are being pulled by the locomotive known as Karson & Kennedy.

And the chance of Karson & Kennedy doing mornings for Doc Flinn a year from now are close to zero.

They are probably already on the radar of PDs in top 20 markets. If they aren't now, they will be soon.

Dynamic morning teams are hard to come by. K&K are a dynamic morning team.

In 2008, they are more likely to end up in Miami, Phoenix, Tampa or St. Louis than hanging out at Flinn's tenement house in the Hickory Hill flood plain.

Kenny, once again you are right on the money. K&K are not long for Memphis...bigger & better will probably be knocking on their door before too long

;D

Congrats to all the "ethnic" stations in the market for a great book. To all the "non ethnic" stations.... whew! you guys better figure it out. I love the "rebuilding" tag someone used describing Entercom's stations. They better hire some more constuction people to hurry up with the projects. Boy... what a sorry state of affairs.

hey kenny..how much do you charge for a kids birthday party? my aunt wants somebody good to spin some tunes. Her birthday is a week before santa drops his load down the chimnay. just curious. rpmm

I don't do kid parties. Wedding receptions, class reunions, company parties ... I'm your guy.

In response to Booker T.'s second obtuse comment about my very short-lived involvement in event ticket brokering ten years ago, please get some counseling. Maybe you should spend more time playing Green Onions and less time taking hairbrained potshots at me.

As I've stated before, Booker T. is my high school and not my band.

If I had to pick one MG's song to play it would be Hang Em High.

By your reaction I'd say it was a direct hit instead of a pot shot.

Considering Kenny made prescient commentary about one of the spotlight shows on the Memphis radio dial, and you (along with another pseudonymous individual) chose to take a verbal swing at him instead of discussing what he said, it's obvious you missed the target completely.

And for the record (pardon the pun), Kenny is a talented guy in his own right--not that he'd be able to pick me out of a lineup, but he's a good guy both on the air and off. On the other hand, since you and the Masked Rapmaster use secret identities, no one can really say whether or not you two have any ability that would support your opinions.

Now, with regard to the topic, why do you folks think ethnic stations are doing so marvelously well?

Obtuse and prescient? Your fancy words hurt my head.

Why does ethnic stations do so well?

I'd guess that the station play more local artists, they play what people are buying and listening to in the clubs, there is way more on-air and on-site interaction between the talent and the listeners, the sense of community that ethnic stations build is a real thing and not some fake "loyal listener club" or "insiders" BS.

Ethic stations also seem to devote more time to the needs, gripes and victories of the commmunity. They don't just air a one-hour public affairs show buried at 5am on a Sunday..They take calls and have discussions on a daily basis.

I can't see a Hot AC or Rock station taking daily time away from the Doobies or John Mayer.

They're not fancy--you should see a physician.

Oh, how we agree, BookerT.

Play local stuff, when it's good. Play what people enjoy listening to in clubs, and even at restaurants. Give your on-air personalities the actual opportunity to let listeners have more than a glimpse of (gasp!) their personalities!

Radio is a uniquely intimate medium, until you suck the intimacy out of it. Then, it's just an iPod with commercials, and who wants that?
