ALL ACCESS hears from multiple well-placed sources that those rumors about veteran talk programmer and former NEW YORK POST radio reporter JOHN MAINELLI getting the nod as the new PD at CBS Talk WFNY-F (92.3 FREE FM)/NEW YORK are on the money, with an announcement coming soon. If and when it's a go, MAINELLI, who programmed WABC-A and WOR-A in the market, will be sort-of-reunited with morning guys OPIE AND ANTHONY, who were at WNEW when MAINELLI consulted that station.

He happens to really know talk radio. That is what he did before and that is what they are asking him to do at WFNY. With talk radio you need to find jocks that you think have a chance at the demo and them move them into the right time slots. With JV and Elvis doing ok in middays( they are number 1 on long island) and moving higher all the time. I see him using them for something. It might well be afternoon drive. Don't start the engines on the plane just yet. Plus if they are let go for others at WFNY, my bet is another station in the area will pick them up for a drive slot.

Just because O&A had the fight with the Doghouse doesn't mean hes gonna dump them. If opie knew half of what he says about radio then he would reconise that the doghouse ratings have gone up since getting there and this is in middays. If this guy is any good he will put the doghouse in Drive time and syndicate them to Sf because O&A are doing cocky there.

I agree with you, but he is only the PD at WFNY in NY. He is not the PD across the board at all the Free Fm Stations in the country. I think that WFNY has a chance to turn things around, only time will tell.

People keep touting him as being the genius behind WABC but someone else mentioned it's a typical right wing talker. Given that being the state of talk radio overall except for "fm talk" that was a no brainer and didn't take a programming guru to do it. People also gloss over the fact that he was the guy essentially behind wnew, which is now playing disco.So much for the genius of wnew as talk. Remember as much as you want to blame Opie and Anthnoy for "blowing it up" remember they were the only thing happening there. Syndicated failures like Don and Mike and Leykis did no better than the local line up all of whom failed. Radio Chick, the rotating morning shows/Farell, failed, and although there are some rabid Ron and Fez fans on this board they didn't do anything ratings speaking either, nothing. The only reason that anybody knows who they are is because O and A pumped them pretty hard and gave them a profile. So before it's pat on the back time for what a great move this is hiring him let's see if he does anything because those past accomplishments are not so great when you really look at em.

Mark Chernoff was not let go, he has handling two station WFNY and WFAN. He is now dealing with just WFAN. Dr. Sniffen, thought that John Manelli was the right person for the job weeks ago. He also thinks that things need to be changed around at WFNY. So we will see if John is the man for the job. Funny, WFNY is now in the business of hiring people that have had problems with Stern. Example O&A and Manelli.

Allan M. Sniffen, D.D.S., is the webmaster of the New York Radio Message Board, a popular and influential web site posted to by many radio professionals. The site is frequently quoted in the New York Daily News and the New York Post. Dr. Sniffen, who is also a Tarrytown, New York dentist, manages the WABC (AM) Musicradio 77 tribute site and offers weekly “Board Reflections” on New York radio.

With Johnny Donovan and Peter Kanze, Dr. Sniffen hosts WABC Radio’s annual Rewound talk shows, held on Memorial Day since 1998.

In the mid-1980s, Dr. Sniffen was a popular disk jockey on WSPK in Poughkeepsie, New York, hosting an all requests and dedications show on Saturday nights as Dr. John Baron.

By the way Anthony from the O and A show posted on this board for a while too, whose to say that he still doesnt?. If you're such a big fan of Dr. Influential whata re you doing here?. Why dont you go back to Sniffen's influential board and leave us nothings in radio alone here!. I admit I do listen to "board reflections" every once in a while mainly because it is so horrible that its pretty funny.

I'd finally come to realize after a while that Mr. S' radio opinions are akin to getting dental advice from a radio P.D. who claimed to be an expert in the field simply because he'd sat in a dentist's office for an hour - once.

So here is the problem this has gotten off message, so I will take it back to the New PD at WFNY. I heard him on the radio today and he sounds like he has a plan for WFNY. Now only time will tell.

Let's hope so. Mainelli has a good mind for talk programming (i.e. - getting a cohesive sound). Mind you, this is a slightly different animal than WABC, so only time will tell.
