All-Access : WLFP (94.1 The Wolf)/Memphis To Move To 99.7, 'Sunsetting' Hot AC WMC (FM 100)

I’m sorry but I have to ask. What idiot at Audacy thinks it’s a good idea to take a heritage station that has been playing todays music for a half century and still successful at doing it and blowing it up for a country format that is below a 3 share in the ratings. Fm100 is Memphis radio. What a terrible decision probably being made by someone not from Memphis or familiar with the Memphis market and history. It’s just a shame. I was more of a Fm100 listener in the 90s and early 2000s but I still listen when I want to hear todays music. It will be sad to see it go.

Has there been any kind of listener campaign to protest the changes yet? Or is it mostly those of us on boards like this who are talking about it at the present time and most people don't know or care? I know it may end up that the changes will happen no matter what but I hope listeners howl and let Audacy know they don't like it, even if it's just a few people.

It really doesn't matter to Audacy what listeners think. Audacy will be out of Memphis completely as soon as someone comes along with a somewhat reasonable offer. Judging by what Cox got for Houston, Memphis could be had for a lot less than some of us ever imagined would be the case.

I would imagine most of the Fm100 listeners are unaware due to if you turn your radio dial to 99.7 right now it is still Fm100. Most probably won’t know until they turn their car on in the morning and wonder why Fm100 is playing country.

I doubt many people know about it. Former sister station WMC-TV mentioned it, but no one else other than industry trades has said anything, at least if the other TV stations and the Commercial Appeal would put it on the main pages of their websites.

I think it was also on Fox 13. I’ve also seen it on Facebook, posted by non radio people. Also I have been asked about the change from people who don’t read radio sites.

Does the average FM 100 listener know, probably not. But it has definitely received some coverage in the media.

I've seen discussion of it on Facebook already. So it isn't just radio insiders anymore.

Although I also gather that most average people won't be aware of it until it actually happens. I DON'T see another brouhaha like what erupted with WSM-AM about 20 years ago.

'80s for me. But I get what you are saying. I aged out of FM 100 and top 40 about 30 years ago.

My wife would still land on FM 100 at times during her scanning to see what was on in the car. She tends to change stations any time they go to ads or talk. Sometimes I can't get her to understand when we're in or near Nashville that 99.7 isn't the same there.

My late sister once picked up FM 100 all the way to Dickson! But I have never been able to do that.
I had a rare moment here in Atlanta years back where WWWQ went off the air during a heavy tropo moment and the signal was flipping between WOOF in Dothan, AL and WMC in Memphis. There are no 99.7 FMs between here and Memphis.

Will this improve Kiss FM's ratings or will Kiss FM move to a stronger signal
I would say the younger listeners of FM100 could flip over to Kiss FM and maybe that would help.

I don't see them increasing their signal (they have to protect KIYS in Jonesboro). They could probably move their signal further east for better coverage in Germantown, Collierville, etc.

Firepoint - times have changed, but this is similar to what happened to KDF, as you know. If KDF came back today, and did it historically right and proper, the Nashville ratings market would be vastly different. This really does sound like a decision made from afar based on numbers of a station that has not been properly formatted to maximize what it could be. This will be interesting.

If 101.9 can move further east, it's not going to much further. It's pretty tightly shoehorned in. WKFF 102.1 out of Sardis already puts a listenable signal into much of DeSoto County, and it's not likely the only station that would give it problems.

Interesting...I wonder if this is Audacy's way of trying to get a "Nashville" station from 300 miles away. Audacy is spending millions to build a studio in Nashville, and the company doesn't have a radio station there.
