All Christmas and then BOOM

On the Philadelphia board someone asked why stations abruptly stop Christmas or holiday music at the stroke of midnight December 25. Excellent question. Do we rip down the tree and decorations on December 26th? It still is the "holiday season". Grabbed an idea from the old WWBA years ago and ran with it. AT WLVU we would play songs like Sleighride, Winter Wonderland, My Favorite Things, Holiday Feeling, Happy Holidays, What are you doing New Years Eve, etc. up until January 1. You get the idea. Then start the new year with something fresh. New image liners, jingles, or contest.

I agree. I'm more in the mood for Christmas music now than I was a week or so ago. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I'm about to start a week's vacation. But I agree, that going cold turkey away from the Christmas music has always seemed a bit jaring. It used to be even more annoying when stations would only do Christmas music for 24 hours between noon Christmas Eve and noon Christmas Day. Since when does Christmas end on Decebmer 25th at noon?

I think about the same time the Christmas 'season' started in mid-September.
I was seeing Christmas decorations and lights 25 percent off at Lowe's either the last weekend of November or the first week of December, and when I asked one of the employees if they'd be getting some stuff restocked, he basically told me they were done stocking Christmas items.

I think we're about a week away from seeing the Valentine's stuff hit the shelves (if it hasn't already!).

Valentine day stuff was hitting the shelves @ wal-mart on Christmas Eve...
Same @ Dollar General & Walgreen's...

talk about being impatient...

enjoy the day...

Cleveland's WDOK (CBS Radio) played holiday music through the weekend, with the exception of Delilah.

I'd personally be game to stations holding off until say, the weekend before Thanksgiving to start the festivities if it means the holiday music continues through the weekend after Christmas.

How about if stations gradually phased in and phased out the holiday music? One can only take so much of "War is Over/Happy Christmas" or "Do They Know It's Christmas" before it starts getting nauseous. :p

Well, at least I only had to hear "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas" once this year. :D

Happy New Year

I personally wish stations would at least wait until AFTER Thanksgiving before they start with the wall-to-wall Christmas music! ::)

It's okay with me if they want to continue with the "Christmas" music through New Year's Day, especially with those tunes that are not Christmas-themed, but rather, merely winter weather songs, like "Sleigh Ride" and "Winter Wonderland." I also think Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne" should play through at least New Year's Day. It played all the way through the winter of 1980-81 when it was a hit.

As for what they play between noon Christmas Eve and noon Christmas Day, who is listening then? Ratings must be very low during that time frame. And I must assume that anyone who is listening during that time probably wants to hear wall-to-wall Christmas music. And besides, most of my former stations usually ran syndicated Christmas programming during those hours anyway. And they usually had their newest, youngest, greenest, and "least seasoned" DJs running the boards during that time. And trust me, you didn't want to hear them talk over the air!
