All Christmas

Didn't Westwood One (now Dial Global) Adult Standards go all Christmas the last few years? Does anyone know or recall when the switch happened. Pre or post-Thanksgiving?

Wow, I don't know. I guess I won't know. I haven't had a Westwood One station for years until this past summer. And I know that station goes all-Christmas during the season, so they might not keep the satellite format going at that time.

I do know one of the two soft rock stations here has already started.

I figure some people must be escaping to satellite radio. Then I realized what if it's there too? XM does have special channels for that. One is Holiday Traditions. That's the one I would choose. Sirius, which so far has failed to impress me because they don't even have "beautiful music", doesn't have a channel with just traditional music.

I've listened to XM at the holidays for a couple of years now. Their "Heart" channel typically changes, along with several other channels. I believe "Holiday Traditions" may be the one the "Heart" changes to. Anyway, I really like the one with the old favorites by Andy Williams, Sinatra and Bing Crosby.

I heard on a promo on KJWL (K-Jewel) in Fresno today for "The Christmas Jewel" beginning November 24. Glad they're not starting before Thanksgiving.

K-104.7 is all-Christmas.

That's okay because last night I heard "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" by Andy Williams, "Little Drummer Boy" by Harry Simeone Chorale, and "Do You Hear What I Hear" by Bing Crosby.

Being a soft rock station, though, they couldn't avoid a really annoying station identification. Plus I had to change stations because they can't avoid contemporary stuff either.

To get back to the question in the first post, YES they do go all Christmas but maybe for a week. They progress into it, adding more and more.

I think Chick Watkins can really manipulate "Selector" very well. I'm sad that Grand Rapids, MI no longer has the Adult Hits format. I especially miss Jeff Rollins.

Correction! I was at the bank today paying my credit card bill. Actually, I also get my cash by writing checks at the bank. That should be no surprise on this thread, actually.

Anyway, they weren't playing Christmas music on K-104.7 then.

It was on Thanksgiving Day. Really nice.

Timeless Classics went down that road the next day. However, they're back to regular music with just a few Christmas songs mixed in.

I just realized the wording of that post made it look like they did it every year. This is actually the first year I have had Westwood One standards at Christmas since 1994. So I can only speak for this year.

I made an observation over the weekend. During one hour, I heard only two Christian songs. One of those was an instrumental. The other was "Carol of the Bells", which I didn't realize was Christian until I heard it on BBN a few years back. BBN went all-Christmas during December one year (and they probably still do it, and they don't just quit on Dec. 26 either). And they only do Christian music.

Anyway, as performed by the Ray Conniff Singers, who I just heard do a version of the song about "A-wassailing" with new lyrics, "Carol of the Bells" was Christian.

Another comment about Westwood One: I was hoping to find a refuge from AC garbage, but no such luck. I heard Mannheim Steamroller (push that button--FAST!) followed by Kenny G (no, can't come back yet!).

A couple more observations about Westwood One.

The affiliate used to do all Christmas music in December before they had a satellite format. Now, when they go local, it's business as usual.

Some songs are just about winter. "Our Winter Love" was played year-round on Timeless Classics. They said it was by Bill Purcell, but it sure doesn't sound like the version I know.

Okay, I didn't sign on here as soon as I got on the computer. I got distracted.

I heard Bing Crosby's duet with David Bowie on "Do You Hear What I Hear" on Westwood One. He was doing duets long before it became fashionable for the geezers to pair up with the hot young stars.

Speaking of which, I did see just enough of the Billboard Music ::) Awards to see part of the Tony Bennett tribute.

For those of you who don't know it already, Worthless Classics is now doing "The Twelve Days of Christmas", as they call it.

Laurie Bandemir is just filling in for Bud Buschardt, isn't she? She didn't replace him. Right?

I couldn't believe it when I heard one of those Backstreet Boys type groups doing "O Holy Night" on Dial Global. The harmony was great, but it just nauseates me to hear them add syllables to words.

If you like "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck, you'll like the version of "What Child Is This" I heard. I can't remember now whether it was Pointless Classics or Dial Global. I don't think it was Lite 102.9.

It probably was Dave Brubeck.

;D Bill Jones on Dial Global made his last song of the day one for his wife. "Christmas Bride" by Ray Conniff. They celebrate their anniversary tomorrow.

I wonder if his wife can listen? I'm sure there's a way. I don't know where he broadcasts from. They used to be in Colorado. They wouldn't want to be there now!

I've been bashing Mannheim Steamroller but it turns out (Dial Global's DJ told us this) they did a good traditional version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". Ultra-traditional, actually. The sort of thing Jethro Tull might have done. Now why did I say it like that?

The problem with Mannheim Steamroller is that synthesizer garbage.

We're running all Christmas starting this morning (Sunday) after our "Gospel Brunch" which featured a lot of Christmas music as well. We'll be back to normal at 12:01 AM Tuesday, Dec 26. Meanwhile it is a chance to hear a lot of Standards artists doing Christmas music. www.kzqx.com

She is just filling in for him (so they say) Timeless Classics was playing a great mix of nostaglia music, now they have returned to thier "tweeked" format again, going lighter and lighter. Seems like the unforgettable sound of the 40's 50's and 60's is being blended out along with Joe lacena and Eddie Hubbard. They are not going to attract new listeners, and will only annoy and loose thier loyal following.

Lighter and lighter?

The problem is that too much of the music is too loud.

Menawhile, Jeff Rollins just played "Call Me Irresponsible". And all the songs except this one by Dusty Springfield while I was in the car could have been called standards. Dusty Springfield's sounded close enough to qualify.

I'm at my destination now ... I could turn on a radio, but the signal wasn't too good a minute ago.

I meant to say all the radio stations cut me off, but I'm at the house of some relatives who are playing Christmas music.

No, I was alone yesterday, but I had Mr. Rollins, Mr. Simon and Mr. Harvey to keep me company.

You have to hear Mr. Harvey's Christmas messages, if you haven't already. No, he's not a Dial Global personality, but he does interrupt their programming.
