All-comedy format coming to London

London's CKSL (1410) is going all-comedy in January. CKSL is currently an oldies station owned by Astral.

This was tried on an FM station in Saint John a few years back, and it didn't last. It's worth a shot though, as London is a larger market and it tends to be a good test market for new concepts.

This also begs the question: Will CIQM (EZ Rock 97.5), also owned by Astral, become a BOOM station?

I don't doubt that a Boom FM London isn't far behind, but that's strictly a guess.
Don't forget that new regs have made room for oldies to move to FM
without question in most markets, including London.

I'm not sure if anyone on the FM dial plans to pick up the Oldies format in London though. I'm just merely pointing out one good reason for the change of format.

That would be great if they are moving the oldies to FM or someone else picks it up. Definitely will miss the oldies on 1410 as I drive up to Toronto.

All speculation, but:

I'm not sure a move to Boom is likely with More in Woodstock.

I'm thinking a Virgin CHR for 97.5 soon... the female 25-54 numbers for CHR are the best in years, they can sell it, even in conservative London...

The Fall book comes out Thursday... I'm not expecting anything different than the last 2 books after that disastrous format flip... we'll see all Xmas by December 1st... Virgin by Spring... unless of course Corus gets a whiff of what's going on - then we're back to Energy 103...

I hardly would call More 103.9 in Woodstock oldies - looking at their playlist, aside from the Christmas tracks, they look very similar to BOB FM.

There is definitely room for a CHR station in London, as the only true CHR station regularly listenable in London is 91.5 The Beat from K-W. 106.9 The X from Fanshawe College does fill some of that hole, but their format is more of an urban CHR.

I can't see London without an Oldies Station - too many listeners want that music - and we're not going anywhere - we want it back!

I Never said More 103.9 was Oldies, I was responding to whether or not I thought Astral would flip 97.5 to Boom. Boom isn't Oldies either, and is very similar to what More and Bob are doing, which is why I doubt they'll adopt the format in London. Here's a BOOM Toronto sample hour from last Wednesday 10am:

10:59 AM "HOLD THE LINE" - TOTO BUY ON ITUNES
10:55 AM "FASHION VICTIM" - ROUGH TRADE BUY ON ITUNES
10:51 AM "JACK AND DIANE" - JOHN MELLENCAMP
10:47 AM "MY BEST FRIEND'S GIRL" - THE CARS BUY ON ITUNES
10:36 AM "LITTLE BONES" - THE TRAGICALLY HIP BUY ON ITUNES
10:32 AM "IF YOU LEAVE" - OMD (ORCHESTRAL MANOUVERS
10:22 AM "DIAMONDS DIAMONDS" - MAX WEBSTER
10:17 AM "SLEDGEHAMMER" - PETER GABRIEL BUY ON ITUNES
10:12 AM "SOMEBODY'S WATCHING ME" - WARMEN BUY ON ITUNES
10:09 AM "SHARE THE LAND" - THE GUESS WHO BUY ON ITUNES
10:05 AM "I MELT WITH YOU" - MODERN ENGLISH BUY ON ITUNES
10:01 AM "LAST OF THE RED HOT FOOLS" - JITTERS

Anybody wanting to listen to Oldies and tuning into Boom for them will be deeply disappointed.

I sympathize. I get my Oldies from other sources now... Online and now Galaxie. Satellite radio is also a good option.

Well, is there an FM in London (or immediate area) that's honestly due for a format change?
That's what it might take.
The CRTC rules are one thing (Now allowing Oldies on FM in most markets), but the very basic rule of radio is another...

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

I'm familiar with the internet - but I want to turn my radio on locally and hear 50s & 60s music. London is diverse enough and definitely has an older demographic that wants to hear this music.

Today I noticed that the domain name boom975.com is registered to Astral Media, and has been since May 13, 2011.

Therefore, it would not surprise me if EZ Rock in London becomes the next Boom station once Oldies 1410 flips to all-comedy.

How is Funny 1410 doing? Does it have any local programming? News or weather?

I haven't checked out that station yet, but it costs nothing to borrow a body from a sister station to cover something as simple as a vt repeater of their news/weather/sports report, so I would expect some sort of local info.

Oh for sure...I just can't help but wonder how they could brand the newscast. "Funny 1410 News" sounds just plain wrong, unless it's a roundup of comedy news.

They would most likely simply run a a quick voice over "More Funny on Funny 1410 coming up, but first from the news room here's a reality check..." (or something like that...or just mention that it's news from the sister station...)
