When one considers all the greats that have passed on, many before their time, why not a format that spans a number of generations? Holly, Hendrix, Joplin, Hayes, Cobain, Morrison, Williams, etc, a very diverse group of musicians but with a common element of great music. And many of the real creative ones died well beyond their time. There must be at least 100 greats who could be part of the format. Maybe the format would spur listeners to part with their money while they are still around, maybe not.
Has anyone ever considered this type of format? Play virtually all of their stuff, not just the "hits."
I've been thinking about this one for several years...
With all the segmentation of radio into tight formats (mostly playing the same real tired old hits), could something like this be viable where listeners have so many other choices?
As a non radio "pro", I'm not sure. It seems radio is forced to try (unsuccessfully) to take the safe way
out. But there are a lot of former listeners who don't reside in the mainstream. Maybe this would appeal to them. Maybe not.
