All I Can Say Is WOW!!!

Since I was feeling a little homesick tonight I decided to listen to some good ole Columbia radio... I checked out all my faves then I decided to check out the web stream of WXRY... I could not believe my ears... While all of the other stations are running either 32k or 34K here is xry with a nice sounding 201K of glorious audio... Thanks Steve for a very good sounding web stream... Everytime I come through Columbia I only get to hear your station for about 5 or 10 minutes so I really can't tell how good the audio sounds... If it is as good of a sound as what goes over the net I know I am missing out on something pretty good... I really like hearing the jingles as that is something you don't hear on normal alternative stations... Happy New Year everybody from soggy Rockford IL... CC1

And a Happy New Year to you as well from soon-to-be soggy SC !!! ;D

(Hey, at least you have a chance of seeing some snow later this week.)

Best,
Robyn

Hey Robyn I am ready for some snow :). I have a brand new snow blower just waiting to be put to use... We had 14 inches of snow right on Dec 1st then we hit a dry spot... Take care and we will catch ya in 07... After Tuesday or Wednesday I will be offline getting things set up for my new PC which will be coming next week... CC1

I invite you to try the new AAC+ stream at www.Surfside1640.com. It is on 24kbps and sounds pretty clean. Though we are in the process of processing adjustment. You might be surprised that at sub dialup bandwidth, AAC sounds almost as good as a 128kbps stream. It is fully stereo as well.

Then... wait until we launch the 64kbps stream as AAC. The quality will be pretty nice...

I think AAC is the same format as HD. Nevertheless, it was developed by Orban/CRL- the people behind the Optimod.

Have a great New Year!

Dave

Hey Dave I have listened to you guys as well... Nice sounding stream... I guess I am an audio nut for good clean audio OTA< Internet, or Satellite... It drives my wife crazy when we are traveling and I am always trying to find that perfect sounding radio station that really WOWS my ears... Unless the processing has been changed I had little ole' WPUB in Camden sounding pretty good... They do oldies which was real fun to set up... I was never happy with the settings Orban came up with so our CE put his tools and my ears to the test... I always liked the sound we came up with... It was loud yet did not make you want to turn the dial after you listened for a few minutes... There was just enough punch that it brought a lot of the oldies to life eventhough it was going through our ENCO... Take care down at the coast and when I am down there next summer I will give you guys a listen... CC1

Thanks for the compliments! I have heard WPUB driving through Columbia a few month ago and was impressed. Nice highs in the signal. Oldies is a hard format to process. When I was with Oldies 93 in GBO, we had a sweet system with an 8100, Aural Exciter, Wideband processor and a composite clipper. When I was with WTRG in Raleigh, we really had fun- we were able to use just about everything that was out as a demo. When I first got there, we had an Omnia that seemed to be causing multipath issues west of the metro. Ben Brinitzer, the CE there, was, like myself, always shooting for a better sound. (Prob why he's the VP of Engineering for CC out of Charlotte) We ended up settling on an 8200, Aural Exciter, Composite Clipper and a tube amp first thing out of the digital board. Tube amp was built in house by a genius Ben hired in his department. We sounded brilliant- yet loud and punchy. It was a fun time for an audiophile like myself.

Very tricky with the stereo separation and wide range of program material to get perfect.

Thanks Caroll for the compliments.

At mobile.wxryfm.org we give access to our main stream a mono 8k stream and a 48khz AAC stream.

The mono is mainly for our MOH system, but it sounds pretty good on a mobile device with low bandwidth.

The 48khz is there for more serious low-bandwidth listening. Both the mono and 48khz feeds are off-air through a Carver tuner. The main stream is lightly processed through a separate chain.

I was listening to a couple CD's of the air signal last night. Compared to everyone else, WXRY is pretty flat. Did it that way on purpose because the format appeals to females and the high end would drive them nuts.

You don't notice the station is pretty flat until you punch around and see how much the high-end is hyped on some of the other stations. B106 is pretty close to how we've set things up with a nice, solid sound.

The only thing I am not happy with at WXRY are the mics. Putting processors on them has brought out the flaws in the current mics.
