"All My Children" and "One Life To Live" to return online

Saw in my local paper this morning that Prospect Park's The
Online Network has set April 29 as the debut date for the return
of ABC's long-running soaps "All My Children" and "One Life To Live."
The shows will air five days a week, but each episode will be only
30 minutes. The episodes will be available on Hulu and on iTunes.

"All My Children" began production last month; "One Life To Live"
begins production next week. A number of favorites (the article
doesn't say who but I would hope Susan Lucci and Erika Slezak
are among them) will be on the new shows, and Agnes Nixon is
acting as creative consultant. The shows are being produced in
Stamford, CT.

Makes me think that Procter & Gamble could have saved a bundle
by cutting "Guiding Light" and "As The World Turns" to 30 minutes
each, whether they stayed on CBS or went online.

To be honest, Prospect Park should also syndicate these soaps to local TV stations.

I suspect a few stations are dissastifeid with their daytime lineups that they'd want to pick them up.

Joseph if the networks are dropping these soaps who else is going to pick them up? Cable nets are not going to want them... they can get off network stuff on the cheap and get higher ratings. Same thing for FOX/My/CW affiliates. There was a reason why the networks were dropping soaps... people were not watching them and versus talk/court shows etc... they normally cost more to produce than what they can get in ad revenue.

According to
http://abc.soapsindepth.com/2013/02/lucci-is-working-hard-to-make-amc-return-a-reality.html
(which also references http://abc.soapsindepth.com/2013/02/lucci-and-canary-back-to-amc.html)
there had been talk that Susan Lucci would appear for 1 episode, but that has been cut to just a 1-sided phone conversation scene (and not Erica's side either), and it's not mentioned which episode that will be.

Meanwhile, these cast lists were released in late February for both shows:
http://abc.soapsindepth.com/2013/02/full-amc-and-oltl-cast-lists-revealed.html
and it does include Erika Slezak.

I'm not sure how much will be seen of each character each day since the shows will be a 30-minute length again. I'm kinda surprised there is as much cast on each show as what's listed (plus a few others added since the lists came out), as they won't all have time to have screen time on just 1/2 the show they were all used to. I'm not sure whether the production company will do AMC and OLTL like how characters are presented and timed on The Bold & the Beautiful or if they have something else in mind.

I've not heard any kind of plan yet for doing more than online showings of AMC or OLTL, especially including syndication. It could be that local stations feel like court/talk/service shows will make them more $$ than syndie soap episodes will (??).

As for P&G and their soaps' presentation and length, with the company no longer caring about having a daytime production presence, they likely didn't really care about any other transformative changes to their shows (ATWT, GL, or even Another World) before the cancellations came. So many fans wanted P&G to do DVD collections of their shows, and the company really wasn't in any mood to do that either.

I would hope SoapNet would run them either on their channel or, at the very least, on their VOD offerings (available on cable systems like Verizon FiOS).

If online is the way to go with those shows, the smartest thing they could do is run ads for their show on ANY website that's all about what's going on in the world of soaps. The soap fan is already there.

direct tv has both soap net and Disney jr.

What I meant was that Charter didn't pick up Disney Jr. It was past midnight and I wasn't thinking straight. ::) (Where's a sleepy smiley when you need it? :D)

Back in 1974 American Home Products tried to syndicate "Secret Storm" after CBS dropped it. The syndicated version never got on the air; AHP had problems getting clearances in the bigger markets, but also because the production costs made the show almost prohibitive to most stations, which at the time were making more money with syndicated game and talk shows (like Mike, Merv, and--starting in the fall of that year--Dinah). That's why you won't see the new episodes of "AMC" and "OLTL" in syndication.

This is going to be a hard project to pull off, financially. I don't see them building up enough audience to break even off Hulu.
