All News 106.7's Melissa Carter Replacement

So these are two rumors that I've been hearing:

1. Cumulus plans to hire former Good Day Atlanta host/traffic anchor Cheryl White full time.

2. Cheryl Castro will slide back into afternoons, with White taking mid-days.

Word of caution...this is only rumor and speculation at this point- nothing more. But as I've said in the past, this doesn't matter much. Boredom and sleep-inducing content/anchoring, which in turn translates to suckish ratings, will continue until someone at the station decides to be a creative leader. Just as I've said about 92.9...when that happens, we'll talk.

When AN106.7 started last year, Cheryl Castro was on in the afternoon with Greg Black. Putting it diplomatically, don't bring her back in the afternoons. Cheryl White's OK, but the station should spend more time finding someone to pair with Black in the afternoon. The 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. had been the stations best block. I also hope they are taking a good look at the 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. broadcast.

The terminology, "boring and sleep-inducing content/anchoring," best sums up the station's problem. Carrying it a step farther, the sports reports are not updated and the same content is regurgitated over and over. How many sports reports do they record for a five hour block. Only one or two? When you hear, "The Braves face the Marlins tonight...," and the game is in the sixth inning, it indicates someone doesn't care about updating the content.

The same is true with the Atlanta Business Chronicle business reports. Are only one or two recorded for a four or five hour block. You can tune in at 12:20 a.m. and hear word for word the same content at 6:20 p.m.

There is a lot of work that needs to be done, and this is simple stuff. It's not that difficult to freshen the broadcast.

I have to agree with you. I like 106.7, but I am getting tired of all of the repeat blocks. Sometimes its talk about the market up(or down) at the moment, but the market closed an hour ago. Also don't like teasing a story and then mentioning it for 5 seconds much later in the broadcast. Maybe the station should spend more than 30 seconds covering a story and at times do an extended piece on a topic. Ad in an online poll or a minute of twitter or Facebook input on the subject to get listeners more actively involved.

There is no enterprise reporting at AN106.7. In other words, no depth, but a lot of what I call "hit and run journalism." I sometimes wonder if they even have developed contacts with news sources. Any extensive interviews they do is a two or three minute interview of another reporter (usually an ABC radio reporter), which is like one talking head talking to another.

I have heard one of the Channel 5 weather / meteorologists "live" for a 2 or 3 min. segment, and one time I heard a "live" segment from the Atlanta Business Conical but like most all news operations they usually "stick to the clock / format wheel.

Last time I worked at a station with with ABC Radio News they had a 5 minute news cast at the top of the hour, which it appears that 106.7 takes only the first segment. I personally would use the whole 5 minutes, tease for a minute then go to traffic and weather. (good bath room break too). When Peter Jennings was alive he occasionally did an ABC Radio newscast at 4 or 5 pm. I don't know if the Fox 5 deal will allow the ABC TV anchor to do a news cast or if the ABC TV anchor does a radio news cast anymore, A Network TV Anchor should have lots of credibility which is very important in the news business. Even in the same building it appears that the sports update is not under 106.7's control. The cluster manager should be able to make this sure the updates are timely. What could be cool would be for a "guest news-maker (mayor, congressman, Arthur Blank type)" to sit in for an hour or to and either answer text questions or talk with a reporter during a couple of segments. It would be nice if the Atlanta Business Chronicle recorded at least 4 segments even if just reworks of the same stories.

IMHO: 106.7 has come a long way, but there are still some improvements to be made. Remember most of the successful All News operations have had decades to get tuned to their market. I have been pleasantly surprised by the 106.7 product.

Make a few changes

AMEN to every one of the suggestions posted thus far. I'm attracted to AN106.7 but not yet addicted to it (as I am to 780WBBM and WCBS880).

And can we get more than 45 seconds of sports? I know Carlos Medina is busy over there at 680THE FAN, but could he rip just a few more grafs off the UPI machine to read?

I'm not certain carrying the full 4:55 of ABC news would help, now that WSB has stretched their TOH cast to about 6:00, but you do wonder if more is happening in the world. It is maddening that the BOH headlines from the network are re-write of the hour's lead story! Surprisingly, though, there is sometime more new content then than at the hourly broadcast.

Tweak it just a bit more, AN106.7.

No, none of the ABC TV anchors do radio newscasts anymore. Charles Gibson did the TOH 5PM ET newscast during the week when he was anchoring ABC World News Tonight before retiring in 2009, but as for Diane Sawyer, no, she doesn't do any radio newscasts at all.

As is becoming routine after almost a month, Cheryl White has once again been placed with Greg Black this week. I guess all we need is an official announcement from Jim Mahanay, huh?

The afternoon show now is more stiff and sounds the same as the mid-day show. The pace of the news is slow. I was listening to WSB's morning show last week and there are a lot of things that are good about the show. There are no "stop signs" during the WSB show. Sounders happen but the WSB anchors never stop talking. Tuning from WSB to WYAY is a huge jolt. The WYAY morning show seems sleepy and slow in comparison. I don't know if there is really 40% more news on the the WSB morning show than AN106.7, but it does feel like I hear a lot more stories.

Back to the afternoon show. The afternoon show is now more generic. I wonder how big a hit AN is going to take in the ratings.

No doubt AN106.7 isn't living up to its potential. If it wasn't foor audio reports from FOX5, it would be really lame.
