Washington All News station WTOP has moved to 103.5FM:
WTOP Live Audio Stream

In it's place on 1500 AM and 107.7FM is Washington Post Radio a joint venture of the Washington Post (prior owner of WTOP) and Bonneville International (current owner and a venture of the Mormon Church) to produce "a product that entertains, provides needed depth that currently might be found only on some public-radio stations, and provides news through the perspective of Generations X and Y."
Washington Post Radio Audio Stream

It's not your father's all news station. It includes air talent from WTOP delivering news in very "conversational" style (not radio news style) doing very chatty, casual and informal interviews and de-briefings with writers for the newspaper. It sounds sort of like big market voices doing small market morning radio.

WTOP was number one in the market in the fall book. The all news format generally gets old demos. The challenge here is to see whether, by moving all news to FM and/or developing a different style news service, the format can reach the money demos. In addition, all news is also expensive to produce and WTOP now is able to amortize costs across three distinct services. The industry will be watching.

WTOP also produces Federal News Radio on 1050 AM, which is all news radio for Federal Employees with special emphasis on stories relating to federal workers pay, benefits and job security.

Washington Post Radio Debuts Today

The previously reported launch of WTWP-AM & FM/Washington — a joint venture between Bonneville and the Washington Post — finally became a reality today. Broadcasting at both 1500 kHz and 107.7 MHz, the joint news and information venture will draw on the newsroom and personnel resources of both the Post and Bonneville's popular all-News WTOP-AM & FM.

The station will also be the flagship for Major League Baseball's Washington Nationals, with games airing on both frequencies with the start of this year's season. Former KGO/San Francisco News Director Greg Tantum is WTWP's PD and is being assisted by longtime WTOP VP/News & Programming Jim Farley.

The inaugural schedule features Mike Moss in mornings, Hillary Howard from 10am-noon, former WAMU/Washington news anchor Sam Litzinger in the noon and 2pm hours, the 1pm Post Politics Hour and Bob Kur from 3-7pm.

I listened some. Boooooring!

I don't see how they can get geezers to listen let alone Gen X and Y.

But it does look like the Washington Post at least will put stories on the radio (and website) before the newspaper comes out. When I was listening they had reporters and others talking about stories happening today. But all it is long Sunday morning public affairs type interviews. Main idea seems to be to promote the paper.

It's their first day so maybe they are a little rough around the edges but even so the basic idea looks like a dud.
