All-news for the Triangle?

Simple question: Would an all-news station work in the Triangle market? Not
news-talk but strictly news, perhaps from one of the national feeds such as CNN or AP, with local bulletins and weather? Sort of like WXII-830 in the Triad before the religious folks bought 'em out. Just wondering...

Would they jump on a broadcast outlet for that network if one became available?

It would have to be alot of National News....I dont think enough happens in the Triangle.

All news is also a very expensive kind of operation to do locally.

WXII was basically AP Network News with some local elements recorded by the TV people. Was not very successful as a business - not did it accomplish the goal of promoting the TV station.

Remember guys, this is a business and if it don't make money, it ain't gonna happen.

I was thinking of it being a souped-up TIS station aimed specifically towards the commuters on the Beltline, with snippets of local and national news thrown in to keep it from getting monotonous. Has this been done anywhere else (with the possible natural exceptions of LA and NYC)?

I've lived in three top ten markets with BIG news stations, these stations were essential listening and got great numbers. But these were markets with a lot of things going on that were of interest, lots of major league sports, lots of commuters on lots of freeways with lots of backups ("traffic and weather together on the 8's!!!!") , lots of local interest stories, and lots of local scandels. There's just not enough "meat" in the Triangle to make a full time news station work. And there aren't really any good AM signals other than WPTF. News DOES NOT work on FM.

Couldn't the Trianglenewsradio.com be put on an AM talk station? It's all on the web, already there for us, wouldn't it be easy to just bring that exact news feed over to an AM station?

If I remember, Curtis Media owns Triangle news radio, and they also own AM 570/620. Since 570 and 620 have low ratings, it seems easy to bring that format to those stations.

But I agree, it will not happen.

It'd be nice, though. At night I'll often turn to AM 880 WCBS out of New York for news when everything else has nothing. Though there would not be enough local stuff needed to fill that type of station, I can still picture many people listening just the same.

If anyone did do it, it would have to be Don Curtis. No one else could afford the manpower needed for just one station. He has "North Carolina's largest radio news team" at his disposal...<P ID="signature">______________

Exactly. It's all sitting there for him to bring over to the two AM stations he has at his disposal. And unless I'm missreading the 12+ ratings, it's sure to bring in more money than Dr Laura he's got now on those stations.

To have all this local news on the internet only, isn't it sort of a waste?

In a market where car accidents are still lead stories on the local TV news, how could you possibly fill 22 minutes, let alone 24/7. Car accidents may be good TV, but they're lousy radio. I just wish MSNBC would affiliate with radio stations. That's what "I be listenin' to" on my satellite radio.

TriangleRadioNews.com recycles WPTF's hourly newscasts on the half hour. Other than that, TRN content is mostly AP All News Radio, which will cease to exist after this month. My guess is TRN will fold at that time as well.

I have never heard of a lasting successful all-news radio station outside of major markets such as NY, LA, DC, Dallas, etc., where the potential huge cume will support them.

I was wondering how they manage traffic reports on an internet-only station. Maybe we're supposed to listen before we leave the house?

Whatever happened to that 5 KW 1460 signal out of Fuquay-Varina? I understand Bishop Willis was required by the FCC to divest that one. 1460 would be a perfect place to test the aforementioned "souped-up TIS" concept. Is Curtis at its ownership limit now or is there no such thing anymore? Has 1460 been deleted entirely?

Willis had to surrender the license for WCRY 1460 a little over a year ago as part of a penalty for numerous violations at several of the company's stations.
