All News Imaging

AN106.7 is still playing "...serving the capital city..." which attaches the city to Georgia. Nothing wrong with that fact, but everyone knows that Atlanta has been quite bigger than Georgia for decades.

That type of image is not an insult to ATL, but a kind of inverted complement. If AN106.7 is going to impress listeners, it needs to kill off anything that "confines" this town to just being the "capital city".

Is it just me, or does that imaging sound out of place to anyone else?

I don't really know WHO or WHY the "Capitol City" slogan was put into place, though I sorta like it. All News and WSB are about equal in the hype the broadcast gets from the imaging (something I think adds depth to the broadcast).

I was told that WYAY would be scaling down some of their information, though I have yet to see that happen (and that move may have been effected by the incoming of Jennifer Perry as PD.) In general, I don't think that it is necessary for Jim Cutler to say that "this is traffic" when Andy Rose, Michelle Wright, etc. just told us that. But someone must like it!

The current imaging of the station contributes to listener fatigue. It is good for getting the listener to pay attention for a few minutes, but not for a long period. Basically, it is good for cume but not TSL. In it's current form, AN106.7 cannot become background sound in the car and that makes it hard to listen to for the entire one hour commute. Now, is that bad? In Cumulus' eyes, it is probably a good thing as it gets people to sample the station. The problem is getting them to come back and stay. At some point the imaging has to change from building ratings to retaining ratings. What is that point in time?? I don't know... that is for the people who know about building ratings to decide.

For me personally, it is past time. I like AN106.7, but after awhile, I just have to tune away for awhile. But, they cannot program the station just for me unless I am sponsoring the entire newscast, and I am not. So, until I win the lottery and can afford to fully sponsor the station, the decisions still belong to those who are paid to understand ratings.

AN106.7 is a top-notch station; however, the imaging has a lot to be desired. Ever since they uttered those words, "Capital City", I have cringed. They took that phrase from other Cumulus station's imaging and it shows. For a market like Tallahassee for Florida or Jackson for Mississippi, it dovetails nicely. However, for a city with the size and scope of Atlanta, it screams "small market" imaging. It is not impressive and does not adequately highlight the fact that they are serving the #9 market.

I hope the execs at AN 106.7 are following these posts. There is too much imaging and too many sounders. A sounder for traffic, weather, business news, sports, etc. Let the anchors intro it. Eight sounders every half hour and it starts to hurt.

The number of sounders played is not bad as other all news stations use that many every half hour, but the imaging voice and the Impact News sounders are what makes it irritating. For whatever reason, Impact News sounders are also used at Houston's all news station and for a time at KRLD in Dallas. For some reason, it is assumed they work in the sunbelt. When AN106.7 signed on, I was expecting a bigger, heritage sound like WCBS, WTOP, or even 1010WINS. That is not what we got. The product is good for the age of the station. They grow everyday, but as stated here, the imaging can make it hard to listen to for extended periods of time.

IMPACT NEWS SOUNDERS (if you want to hear them all and an aircheck from KRLD at the bottom of the list).

"The capital of the South" might be more appropriate.
Better, but still too regional. Atlanta is an international city, and if Cumulus wants its news stations to be respected, they need to respect its markets,

(BTW, Atlanta is the largest market that is the capital of its state, but people don't really care about that :D)

Biggest reason not to use "Captial City" is that NO ONE in the past 40 years uses that phrase to describe Atlanta. Why would you use a phrase that clearly says, "We Ain't From Around Heuh..."

All news stations aren't supposed to be about TSL. Their TSL occurs through occasions of listening, not people listening for an entire hour. If the imaging starts to fatigue after 40 minutes or so, they're probably doing it correctly.

What about after 4 minutes? ;D

Well, I think that it is fine to describe ATL. I mean it is better than the ghetto slogan of Hotlanta. I hate that.

ATL is the Cap. City. Let's face it, ATL is not NYC or Chicago or LA or even Seattle in recognition around the world. Yes, people fly through ATL
and is a large metro - but come down to it - ATL metro is pretty polarized to Georgia. Most people across this country (outside of Southerners and the Southern States) still see Georgia and ATL as a Bible Belt City - which indeed it seriously still is!
