All-News Jan. Scoreboard for Top 10 Markets

Winter is a good time for All-News stations in snowy markets. KYW Philadelphia (and WWJ Detroit in Market #11) were #1, and All-News stations in Chicago, SF, and DC were #2. New All-News stations in Atlanta, WYAY, and DC, WNEW-FM, both went above a one-share.

1. NYC...WINS #5 (tie) and WCBS #10
2. LA...KNX #14 (tie)
3. Chicago...WBBM/WCFS(FM) #2
4. San Francisco...KCBS/KFRC(FM) #2 and KGO* #16
5. Dallas...KRLD* #15
6. Houston...KROI #24
7. Washington...WTOP(FM) #2 and WNEW-FM #22
8. Philadelphia...KYW #1
9. Atlanta...WYAY(FM) #19
10. Boston...WBZ* #6

Am I the only one that doesn't think WBZ should be on this list? They run talk from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. weekdays and many, many infomercials now air on the weekends.

Is there a reason why the non-commercial news stations are left out of this post?

In some of these markets, like Houston and Atlanta, the NPR station is beating the highest rated commercial news station.

Why are WBZ, KGO and KRLD on the list? Because most of their weekdays are devoted to the All-News format. I put an asterik next to their call letters.

Why aren't NPR stations on the list? I think NPR is its own format. Yes, there's lots of news in Morning Edition and All Things Considered. But many of their stories are long-form features. And during the day you get things like Fresh Air and Science Friday, which aren't part of the All-News format.
