All News Radio

I happened to be in the Lehigh Valley late yesterday afternoon, giving me the opportunity to flip between KYW, WCBS, and WTOP. I'd forgotten how nice it is to have an all news station at your disposal, a luxury here in NEPA. The news situation in this market is pitiful.

KYW is in a class by itself. I can't count the number of
traffic jams that station got me out of in my lifetime when I was a semi regular at Phillies games in the 70s and 80s.
"KYW newstime, 10:56AM, it's 79 degrees on Indepdence Mall, now
with KYW traffic, Nigel Wick........" then the jingle, "KYW 1060..."

David, I could never be a traffic reporter. I get lost on the Sans Souci.

As long as you don't get lost going up the Eynon.
Remember WBRE AM and FM all News Radio of the mid 70s?
It was when NBC Radio offered an all news service. Locally
Bud Brown, Bill Graham (from Hazleton I believe) the late
Guy Randall, Patricia Delano and Joe Gries handled the anchor
duties. There was a woman there (she was only there a few
months who wound up at WHP in Harrisburg). 98.5 FM and 1340 AM,
WBRE All News Radio.
Then, in 1977-78-79, WVIA FM started a thing called THE DAY
BEGINS AT MIDNIGHT. Funded by CETA employees (Comprehensive
Employment Training Act) WVIA FM had an all night news presence
with David Kush, Roger Heydt (still heard on WNAK), the
late Joe Talmon, a very young Shadoe Steele, a guy by the name of Ed Karpovich who ran the board and various arts reports from around the area. By that time, I
was off the air there and in the Development (Begging) Department.
But it was quite a hoot to hear an echoed voice saying at 12 straight up,
"The Day Begins At Midnight!". The show's run ended when President
Reagan cut the program funding.

I don't remember the WVIA effort, but I do remember WBRE Radio.

There are so many stations around the country begging for a viable format. I'm really surprised one of the big networks doesn't offer some type of national/local hybrid news format. WKOK in Sunbury pulled it off rather nicely when AP was up and running. They still do a nice job, taking newscasts and features from a few different networks and supplementing that with local content. If Sunbury can do it, surely Wilkes-Barre/Scranton can attempt something similar.

I don't know what happened to the Times' application for AM 1320.

There are still cross ownership rules that prohibit radio/tv combos in the same market.

There's a radio "news hole" in this market you can drive a truck through.

Yes, all news would be a bit pricey, but if done right, it can really pay off.

That's a very interesting supposition. A Scranton Times AM News
station or a WNEP TV news station. When I worked at WARD, the
simulcast of the 6PM Newswatch 16 program was pretty popular.
The question is would an effort like this canibilize their local
advertising or enhance it? Look at ESPN Radio. It has grown as
an extension out of the TV giant. They used ESPN staff (pros to
begin with) to man it. I can see that happening with WNEP but not
the Times. The 1 person, 1/2 day news department of Ruth Miller
will not cut it for a full fledged format. They'd have to get
talent because the guys who do the news promos on 22 at night,
hyping the next day's newspaper are no balls of fire.

Didn't WVIA originally want to be AM-FM-TV? I wonder where they were going to plant their AM crystal??<P ID="signature">______________
