Unfortunately, we have to say goodbye to All-News 106.7 WYAY, which will make Atlanta the only Top 10 market with no All-News station. I guess I don't understand Cumulus. A couple of years ago, the Dickey Bros. say All-News is the way to go. They turn KGO San Francisco and WYAY Atlanta into All-News stations, plus add News blocks to Talk KLIF Dallas. WYAY was making slow, but maybe too slow ratings progress. So Cumulus added one Talk show at noon, promising they're still committed to All-News the rest of the day.
Then they add another Talk show in late morning. And by the time the second Talk show starts airing, they decide to just go with Cumulus syndicated Talk nights and overnight, and plenty of infomercials and specialty shows on the weekend. So all that's left are a couple of news blocks in morning and afternoon drive. In its last rating as mostly All-News, WYAY was up to #17, with nearly a half million in cume. Did Cumulus bail too soon? Was WINS or WCBS a ratings success after only a two-year try?
And what does this mean to the other relatively new and struggling All-News stations, KGO San Francisco, KROI Houston and WNEW-FM Washington. Will their owners have patience with their low numbers?
