Less snow meant fewer listeners for many All-News stations. But most still had a good April. KCBS San Francisco and WTOP Washington were both at #1. WWJ Detroit and WBZ Boston hit #2. And WBBM Chicago, if you combine the ratings for the AM and FM signals, also hit #1.
WBBM's two signals are now listed separately in the ratings because they are no longer 100% simulcast. When the Chicago Cubs are playing, 780 airs the baseball games and 105.9 continues with All-News. It turns out the AM is much stronger than the FM. Many of us wondered, when a veteran AM station starts an FM simulcast, does the FM get most of the listening? It turns out, no. If you split the signals, 780 is Chicago's #2 station, while 105.9 WCFS is only ranked at #19. Some of 780's extra listeners may be Cubs fans boosting WBBM's numbers. But who would have thought the AM would outweigh the FM by such a large margin?
1. New York...WINS #7 ... WCBS #15
2. Los Angeles...KNX #12 tie
3. Chicago...WBBM/WCFS(FM) #1 (WBBM 780 #2 + WCFS 105.9 #19 tie)
4. San Francisco...KCBS/KFRC(FM) #1
5. Dallas...KRLD* #21 tie
6. Houston...No All-News station
7. Washington...WTOP(FM) #1 ... WNEW-FM* #20
8. Philadelphia...KYW #5
9. Atlanta...No All-News station
10. Boston...WBZ* #2
(11. Detroit...WWJ #2)
(13. Seattle...KOMO-AM-FM #19)
(25. Pittsburgh...KQV* does not subscribe)
* part-time All-News station
All stations are owned by CBS except WTOP (Hubbard), KOMO (Sinclair) and KQV (Calvary). In parenthesis, I include the ratings for the three All-News stations outside the top 10 markets.
