All-News Scoreboard for Major Markets: August 2015

It's summer, vacations, nice weather, a break from school and politics. And it's also when listening to All-News stations takes a dip. Neither NYC All-News outlet is in the top 10. KRLD Dallas slips to #24. But at least KCBS San Francisco and WTOP Washington are on top in their markets, with WBBM Chicago also the top station if you combine both the AM and FM signals.

1. New York...WINS #13 ... WCBS #15
2. Los Angeles...KNX #14
3. Chicago...WBBM/WCFS(FM) #1 (WBBM 780 #3 + WCFS 105.9 #20)
4. San Francisco...KCBS/KFRC(FM) #1
5. Dallas...KRLD* #24 tie
6. Houston...No All-News station
7. Washington...WTOP(FM) #1 ... WNEW-FM* #20
8. Philadelphia...KYW #7
9. Atlanta...No All-News station
10. Boston...WBZ* #4
(11. Detroit...WWJ #5)
(13. Seattle...KOMO-AM-FM #20)
(21. Baltimore...WNEW-FM* #17)
(25. Pittsburgh...KQV* does not subscribe)

* part-time All-News station

All stations are owned by CBS except WTOP (Hubbard), KOMO (Sinclair) and KQV (Calvary). In parenthesis, I include the ratings for the four large markets with All-News stations outside the top 10 markets.

WWJ will stop being live all the time soon and will go to pre-recorded overnights. Time will tell the impact on ratings. They also let go some well liked anchors.

Someone on the Philadelphia page also says some segments of KYW overnight are recorded and replayed, outside of the traffic reports and the first seven minutes at the top and bottom of the hour. The late night anchor is on from 10pm to 4:30 or 5am, so he/she couldn't be anchoring all those hours continuously live.

But I know that WCBS and WINS are live 24/7. And I assume KNX, WBBM, KCBS, WTOP and KOMO are also live around the clock, with WNEW live outside of the three hours in the evening when it airs Dave Ramsey.

The recorded hours have to be replays, it's not like it can be voice tracked. If CBS intends to make this a trend, perhaps they'll just have a national news feed air with pre-recorded local spots inserted.

If this lets them control costs to the point that they retain the all news stations and formats then so be it. Far better than the alternative of CBS leaving radio or dumping the format.
