All-News Scoreboard for Major Markets: January 2015

Just as Christmas is tonic for most AC stations, harsh winters boost the ratings of All-News stations. WBBM Chicago, WTOP Washington and WWJ Detroit were back at #1. KYW Philadelphia zoomed up to #2 after having some ratings doldrums last year. And even KNX Los Angeles, KCBS San Francisco and KRLD Dallas, markets that don't experience snowy winters, saw ratings hikes.

In this edition, I move KGO San Francisco from the All-News Scoreboard to the Talk Radio Scoreboard. KGO still has All-News blocks in AM and PM Drive but most other dayparts now have Talk shows. KGO, as a part-time All-News outlet, only on AM, did not put much of a dent in the ratings of KCBS, a full-time All-News station on both AM and FM. Six major-market stations tried the All-News format over the last several years: KGO, WYAY Atlanta, KROI Houston, WNEW-FM Washington, and the Merlin stations in NYC and Chicago. All are gone now except for WNEW-FM, which CBS is still supporting, despite modest ratings.

1. New York...WINS #6 ... WCBS #11
2. Los Angeles...KNX #8 tie
3. Chicago...WBBM/WCFS(FM) #1
4. San Francisco...KCBS/KFRC(FM) #1
5. Dallas...KRLD* #15
6. Houston...No All-News station
7. Washington...WTOP(FM) #1 ... WNEW-FM #21
8. Philadelphia...KYW #2
9. Atlanta...No All-News station
10. Boston...WBZ* #4
(11. Detroit...WWJ #1)
(13. Seattle...KOMO-AM-FM #20)
(25. Pittsburgh...KQV* does not subscribe)

* part-time All-News station

All stations are owned by CBS except WTOP (Hubbard), KOMO (Sinclair) and KQV (Calvary). In parenthesis, I include the ratings for the three All-News stations outside the top 10 markets.

Weather wasn't a big issue for Detroit in this survey period making WWJ's performance all the more laudable. I see them doing even better in the next book with the recent weather likely driving listeners to the AM dial.
