All-News Scoreboard for Major Markets: May 2015

Once again, we see the WBBM Chicago All-News simulcast split up, thanks to Cubs baseball. When 780 carries the games, 105.9 WCFS continues the news format. 780 is ranked at #2 in the market while 105.9 is ranked at #18. Who would have guessed that AM listening outweighs FM listening by so much? San Francisco and Seattle are the only other markets where All-News is simulcast, and in all three cases, it isn't because of signal limitations. Just as WBBM is a 50,000 watt station with a great signal, so are KCBS San Francisco and KOMO Seattle. And in all three cases, the FM also has an excellent signal, although for KOMO, its FM station is located closer to Tacoma, picking up some listeners there that may not receive the Seattle AM as clearly.

This may tell us that in cities where it has a strong AM station, CBS is in no hurry to discontinue successful FM music stations to put the All-News format on FM. They include NYC, LA, Dallas, Philadelphia, Boston and Detroit. AM listening may be declining every year but these stations still do quite well on the AM band. And CBS continues to enjoy another revenue stream from an FM music station, at least for the near future.

1. New York...WINS #8 ... WCBS #12
2. Los Angeles...KNX #12
3. Chicago...WBBM/WCFS(FM) #1 (WBBM 780 #2 + WCFS 105.9 #18 tie)
4. San Francisco...KCBS/KFRC(FM) #1
5. Dallas...KRLD* #15 tie
6. Houston...No All-News station
7. Washington...WTOP(FM) #1 ... WNEW-FM* #20
8. Philadelphia...KYW #6
9. Atlanta...No All-News station
10. Boston...WBZ* #5
(11. Detroit...WWJ #4)
(13. Seattle...KOMO-AM-FM #22)
(25. Pittsburgh...KQV* does not subscribe)

* part-time All-News station

All stations are owned by CBS except WTOP (Hubbard), KOMO (Sinclair) and KQV (Calvary). In parenthesis, I include the ratings for the three All-News stations outside the top 10 markets.

It's remarkable to me that 20 years after the merger with Westinghouse, that CBS maintains the two separate all newsers in NYC. Both pull in remarkable ratings for AM stations and the hertiage of both likely mean a lot.

Thanks again for compiling this, Gregg.
