All quiet on the South Bend-Elkhart front???

Boy, it's been quiet on the South Bend-Elkhart front. Any news or speculation from anyone? No new translators are up and 101.9 FM Elkhart has been offline for quite some time (no idea as to why). Any news-please broadcast it here.

According to an FCC filing, 101.9 FM Elkhart went silent November 12th with the stated reason being "financial". That translator has since been assigned to a new owner. By matter of law the new owner has until November 12th, 2008, to return the license to the air (and can leave it off until then, if they desire).

It looks like 105.1 FM asked for a power increase and a channel change to 105.3 FM earlier this week. I don't see anything else pending (waiting FCC approval or waiting construction) in South Bend-Elkhart.

The last action before that was when 106.5 FM "Elkhart" (really Goshen) received approval of it's license. There are no more new translators pending in the area. Everything has been built or expired.

Just released ratings book was ho-hum too.

So who is now taking over 101.9 and what is expected on it/where? Will that station and 105.1/105.3 be in Elkhart? Speaking of 105.1, will it still retransmit WFRN-FM?

Per the transfer filing, 101.9 FM will be translating WFRN-FM.
The license mod for 105.1/105.3 FM also lists WFRN-FM continuing to be the source.

Re:Ratings

Hopefully The Bear(103.9) has reversed its massive slide and its numbers will continue to climb.

Ratings

The Bear is still having problems....their ratings were up a tick, but still not good. I hear that Bob & Tom didn't bounce back either.

How many repeaters does WFRN need? Is their 104.7 signal that bad?

Correct me if i am wrong, but the 104.7 signal is one of the most powerful in the greater Michiana/ South bend area (50,000kw)...

as far as the repeaters go. as long as you are allowed to file... i believe they will continue to pop up.

That's what I'm getting at. What additional population do any of the 104.7 translators serve, which could not already receive the station quite well?

I don't have a problem with the ones that truly serve "fringe" areas, like most of the ones on their map. I'm referring to the ones that are obviously duplicative in nature.

50,000 watts looks good in promotions ... I believe the next nearest 50,000 watt station is WBTU, but being 50kw doesn't mean WFRN has the best coverage of any station in the market. Sunny, U-93 and B-100 are equivalent (even though they are only 13kw, 12kw and 15kw respectively) because they have more height.

I believe it would be fair to say the stations not being promoted are for something they don't want to talk about yet. The 96.1 and 96.5 frequencies (which have been promoted) in South Bend / Mishawaka help out in areas where 104.7 receives interference from other radio stations. The others? I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.

If the frequencies are not causing interference I personally don't see a problem with them. If others wanted the frequencies they should have applied for them or purchased them from someone who did think ahead back in 2003. If I recall correctly everyone who applied for a translator in the area got a CP. Some have gone unbuilt, but I don't recall any denials.

I just heard that WZOW/WOZW at 97.7 and 102.3 will soon be switching to WAITT's hot new format BOB FM. Who will be PD?

OH YEA!! WHEN WILL THE BOB FORMAT KICK OFF? THEY NEED SOMETHING NEW.

PS..Another WQKO Translator has started 98.1 FM in Goshen W251AR. Any news on when it got on the air or did it happen Saturday. I guess the hispanics in Elkhart county will not like it (if they live in Elkhart) since they won't be able to hear WSBL-LP in South Bend.

Figures that 98.1 Goshen signed on the air on Saturday. My semi-local WDFM was at a reduced power earlier last week, so I tried for the Goshen translator. No luck, but I did get WIBN-Earl Park, IN and WMGN-Madison, WI. Of course, as of last FRIDAY, WDFM was at full-power again.

But back to the topic at hand, I believe WSBL-LP has a translator for 106.5 in Elkhart. That should fill the void of WSBL's parent signal in Elkhart County.

106.5 "Elkhart" is actually in Goshen (as noted earlier in the thread). It's a shame they lost their "Goshen" CP. Getting a CP isn't trivial.

There are a few CPs being requested, granted and built in the area. No specifically new stations, just improving the old ones. WFRN recently upgraded one of it's translators (the Granger one built last year) and has CPs to upgrade translators in Mishawaka (96.5) and Elkhart (105.1 turning into 105.3!).
