All Sports Radio Station

With all the talk of another all sports radio station starting up I would like your dream lineup. Money is no object. Time slots are not an issue. Feel free to intersperse ESPN personalities with Fox, satellite, etc. Assume this is the only sports station in Pittsburgh. Dream big. First off, I would air all Steeler, Penguin and Pirate games. Though the Pirates would be on a very short leash. I would air Pitt football and basketball along with Duquesne and Robert Morris basketball. The following would be my lineup. 6A.M-10 A.M. Stan and Guy. Morning drive begins with the Kings of Pgh sports talk. Chris Mack would NOT be a part of the show. 10A.M.-2P.M. Joe Starkey and Mike Logan. Two under rated personalities who have impressed me with their work. 2P.M.-6 P.M. Mark Madden with Jim Colony. They had a nice rapport when they worked together. 6P.M-10 P.M. Jim Rome. 10P.M.-2A.M. Scott Ferrall. 2A.M.-4A.M. Colin Cowherd. 4 A.M-6A.M. Tony Bruno. What would your dream lineup look like?

I can just see it now. CBS Pittsburgh will half ass this entire new station. Sporting News Radio 24/7 a great way to keep costs down. And if Keith Clark is in charge the whole thing will be a train wreck!!!!!!!

Sporting News radio only has a couple of shows really and they reffed stuff. Tim Brando runs live 10A-1P and re-feds form 4-7. They have a live 7-10 show and Todd Wright, who did ESPN overnights, is late night and it looks like the re-feed him in aM drive but their website gives conflicting info on that.

Wright is excellent, it's too bad he's a night owl (he lives in FL and does those hours by choice).

So a local station would have to find a morning show and probably a PM drive as well. Ellis would probably be PM drive. Mornings? Good luck....

I'm from the New York City area & have some info that might help. Just connecting some dots...Gregg Giannotti (producer for the Joe Benigno/Evan Roberts midday show at sportstalk WFAN New York) has announced he's leaving the station for a full-time hosting gig (6-10pm) at "another station". While being interviewed on WFAN's Boomer & Carton morning show last week (Tue. 1/12/10), Giannotti said that he couldn't say where he was going yet (he might be able to make an announcement this week), but did hint that it would be at another CBS Radio-owned station & that the market had 3 professional sports teams. When looking at CBS Radio's station roster, based on that criteria it looked like the choices would have been Houston & Tampa (http://www.cbsradio.com/stations/index.html?sort=stat_format). But now with Pittsburgh entering the equation (& being as it couldn't be announced last week), that seems like a logical landing spot for Giannotti. His last day on WFAN is Fri. 1/22/10. First day of the new gig (& maybe, the format switch, if not a couple days earlier) is the day after the Super Bowl: Mon. 2/8/10. Now looking at Gregg's latest Facebook entry, it looks like the announcement for the new station (& his appointment) will be on Tue. 1/19/10.

Here are links to the audio from that interview: http://www.wfan.com/topic/play_window.php?audioType=Episode&audioId=4310356 OR http://67.72.16.166/wfan/2156414.mp3

Gregg Giannotti's twitter page: http://twitter.com/WFANGiannotti & Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/gregg.giannotti (Gregg mentions on both that he'll announce his future plans via those methods).

I came across the Pittsburgh angle via Taylor on Radio-Info's newsletter of Mon. 1/18/10:

IMHO........

Keith Clark cannot touch the sports station if, in fact, they do it.

I believe that the "suits" already have a plan..........

just stand by and watch it unfold..........

An early-20's New Yorker here? Hope he's talented and understands that the show can't be about New York....

He'd be a better fit for Tampa.... you CAN do a NY-oriented show there, with Yankees spring training and minor league team all right down the street... they even carry the Yankee games there.

But if he's headed our way I wish him well.... you gotta start somewhere....

I agree with Parttimer. If in fact Mr. Giannotti is headed here, he'd better lose the New York angle and he'd better learn about Pittsburgh sports quickly or it will not be a successful venture. I am not against bringing in out of towners to talk Pittsburgh sports. ( Stan Savran has been my favorite local sports personality for years). Pittsburgh, however, (for better or for worse) remains a town that does not easily accept those not from this city to talk about Pittsburgh sports. By the way, who is Carton from the Boomer and Carton show? He sounds obnoxious.

You would need a gun to get Bruce Keidan in to work that shift.

"Money's no object." ;D

Or swap Keidan with Starkey/Logan.

From Radio Ink: "(Terry) Foxx has been working with CBS Radio's Mark Mason (helped develop the original sportstalk station WFAN New York) on presentation for the new station; Foxx said, "It is been a privilege and an honor to create an all-sports FM radio station in Pittsburgh. The on-air presentation will be unique to our market, and our presence will be felt on game days and at major sporting happenings all over town."

Yesterday, Scott Paulsen was announced as "sick", with Ken Laird filling in.

Today, it's been "This is Drive, with Ken Laird, Eddy Crow, and Mike Logan." No mention of Scott, although he's still on the website.

Would DVE be up to something crazy like bringing Scott back?

I've always heard that Romano was a big Scott fan.... and he didn't have a contract at KD, so who knows if he has one with ESPN?

Parttimer,
I was thinking the same thing about Scott. It's strange how Scott just disappeared over the last few days from ESPN Radio. Doesn't Scott have to follow the non compete for before going back to DVE?

If he didn't have a contract with ESPN, he wouldn't have a non-compete, would he? (Although I find it hard to believe that Disney/ESPN would hire him w/o contract.) And I would think that any non-competes from prior contracts would have expired by now... aren't they usually 6 months to a year?
