ALL TALK WGUN

Give the Rivers family credit for finally attempting a format which might have some possibility of developing an audience.
The big $640 million dollar question: Will they spend the $$$ to advertise the new programing and will they hire the staffing needed to sell it?
1690 did well with Air America - at least in terms of ratings. The demos were attractive.....12+ numbers were less than a 1 share but it's listeners were mostly intown, young, and high income.
WGUN covers the intown area well in daytime and can be heard in most parts at night. If the format really takes off and they start making some money they might consider moving the night signal intown so the 78 watts can be used for effectively.
With WAOK already established I'm not sure putting Warren Ballentine on is a good move. WGUN should clearly focus on white progressives - they will never steal the black audience from WAOK.
It seems that with Mike Malloy right around the corner from the WGUN studios he would be a natural hire - I would put him on middays in place of Ballentine.
What to do with mornings.....? These political talkers are a whiny, angry lot.....I'm not sure anyone wants to hear that crap early in the morning. It would have to be the liberal version of conservative Bill Bennett. Bill is mellow and cerebral....not a Hannitty or Limbaugh approach. That would be a great time to have someone focus on more intellectual topics and lay off politics.....but who is out there that can do that and still be entertaining enough to attract the unwashed average Joe/Joesephine?

But you have to remember the transmitter covers a massive black population on the east side, an area WAOK has some issues covering.

WGUN is and ALWAYS will be a mess.

I am convinced that this station, SHOULD have left well enough alone and kept the brokered programming. They had a decent thing going, but they made decisions that from what Im hearing REALLY cost alot of money and destroyed the only income that was flowing into the building. Former Station Manager Kevin Hemmings IS A GENIUS. Kill the income, and play the r&b music. Call letters need to be J O K E ! I agree with Taylor Engineer , This latest move could be a good one, IF THEY MARKET IT ! But we all know the rivers gang.. MARKET IT ??? are you kidding?

They will market whatever they make a final decision on. But we all know the rivers gang.. MAKE A FINAL DECISION ??? are you kidding? :D

.

50,000 watts at 1010 beats 25,000 watts at 1380 every time. Plus, WGUN is in southern DeKalb County which is heavily populated by African Americans. So I agree the signal (1010) is much better.
But remember....WAOK is a heritage black station and has, for an AM, a fairly large audience. Add the internet numbers and you have more than a couple of people listening.
WGUN has no heritage to speak of so they are starting with nothing. With good marketing they could make some progress but...........well - you know. We'll have to see how this one plays out.

I love THIS LINE in Taylors Comment: "WGUN has no heritage".. The Image liners will be great, " No Heritage, No Listeners, Nothing is what were known for WGUN Atlanta"
" Dead Carriers make for great relaxation, WGUN ATLANTA"
What a great signal, What Horrid Owners ..
