All-Traffic Radio: Will It Work?

e-dawg said:
I think they should do news and traffic instead of traffic.

Corus tried it before and didn't work, especially on 940, where it became talk radio, then oldies before going dark. 690 was news radio before having folded.

Did CINF and CINW lincense officialy cancel?

If yes, how will Cogeco get the CINF and CINW back? Will it be 50kw ND-1?

It indicates that Metromedia ended up with the CINF and CINW licenses, but surrendered them to the CRTC.

Actually, Metromedia CMR was the company that originally owned the stations when they were first established -- the company would be sold in 2001 to Corus, which sold its Quebec stations to Cogeco last year. Under Corus and Cogeco, the "Metromedia CMR" name was retained as the licensee name -- CKOI, CFQR and CHMP are three stations that are owned by Cogeco today, but still licensed to Metromedia CMR.

Yes, the licences were cancelled.

The coordinates in the Industry Canada database are apparently wrong. (I found the 690 coordinates particularly suspect, as they're in Mont Royal Park -- maybe a good place for an FM station but a pretty bad place for a 50kw AM! Also, found it strange that the two frequencies were listed at different sites...)

The CRTC notice came out today, and it states both stations would use the same transmission facilities they used as CINF/CINW.

Yes, but they also did not have Transport Quebec spending $3 million per year to finance part of the stations' operating costs.

I'm not sure what the true cost of running these stations will be, but yes, when you cut out a chunk of operating costs, there's more breathing room to throw in (at least) some news updates here and there.

News would most likely have to be done "68 second news break" style though, because people are really expecting to tune in and get their traffic fix.

Interestingly, the new licensees for the stations is Metromedia CMR, the same licensees used for CINF and CINW.

Apparently, when Cogeco acquired Corus' Quebec stations last year, the purchase included intellectual and technical properties used for CINF and CINW, but not the licenses, which were already cancelled.

I see on yesterday's Industry Canada database release that Neeti P. Ray (OBCI) has or will be applying for a new station in Montreal on 600.

Neeti Ray currently owns CINA 1650 in Mississauga and has a cp for a new ethnic station in Windsor.
