AllAccess: WCER/Canton Adds Local Talk

AllAccess reports today that religious-talk WCER/900 Canton is adding a local talk show with someone named Jason Burnette, 6-7 PM weeknights, starting Monday. Station OM John Amrhein, who's posted here before, tells AA that the show completes the station's transition to a secular talk outlet.

I guess that means now Christ no Longer Reigns on AM 900?..WCER=Where Christ Ever Reigns..At least till recently..Their current schedule (probably outdated by now) still has a lot of the Christian teaching programs..many formerly carried on the old WTOF 98.1. I can't see this being that successful for them with all the conservative talk already able to be heard in Canton. I should say though it is good t osee them add a local nightly talk show..

I happened to listen to them a while ago, on their web stream (the broadcast signal basically can't be heard here), and I heard that slogan, along with "We're Christian Education Radio", in their legal ID.

I have no idea if John and company are phasing those slogans out. But even the talk-related liners hint at a Christian perspective.

That may well be true: but for myself as a Christian (and conservative) I saw the Ex WTOF/WHK 98.1 basically jettison most local preachers that used to be a staple on 98.1,(Not that I agreed with them all) In researching Salem when they came into the area, I figured that might happen.

WCER when they saw they werent going to make it as a "Entertainment" station, filled some of the gaps with former WTOF local programs, Then they filled other time with talk shows and "informecials" Salem took off Southern Gospel from WHLO, then got rid of both 98.1 and 640 in order to acquire more stations in the Cleveland "Market" thus using Akron-Canton to further it's ends in Cleveland. WNPQ 95.9 does have some of the programs from WTOF/WCER..but their music is CCM..Not my cup of tea. WOFN 88.7 Beach City Canton has a good mix of music but the teaching is not what I care for either..I see WCER selling out to what will gain the most listeners especially since as I said, Conservative talk can be found all over the dial.. rather than ministry..It saddens me. I'd rather have sieen them try a format that we dont have here.full fledged oldies (not 2-3 songs an hour like WHBC) or Classic Country if they are going to go secular. And who knows how long WNPQ will remain Christian. Sorry for the ramble, but These are areas that have concerned me for years.

Jason was a camera operator at the old WOAC TV 67, and has no on-air radio experience...
Should be interesting to hear this on Monday night...

OA, tune in...

hopefully, you won't be able to it. It would prove that they are powering down at the appropriate time. Pardon the sarcasm. Seriously though, I hope it goes well. Local talk programming is a good thing...albeit rare. Way to go. Good luck on the new venture.

The people who run WCER have to market what is now a format change..just doing it to do something does not cut it..I noticed they were carrying ESPN Sunday Night Baseball this past week..I just happened to stumble on it while searching for something to listen to on my way home from work..

WNPQ is doing something I find increasingly strange..they run Conservative Christian Teaching during the day, then pretty much go all sports at night..word is they'd like to carry high school football on a regular basis..but why? If you're going to market to the Christian audience in print ads, then not market the sports product to any degree, what's the point?

In my brief encounter with the WCER streaming audio today, I heard a promo for Sunday Night Baseball. I've heard it before. They've been running it at least the past few weeks.

One thing about high school sports - it makes money in Northeast Ohio. Period. A station is crazy if it doesn't want to do this. When I was operations manager of a small AM station on the fringes of the Youngstown market, I had to basically yell at our GM to let us do it, and it was basically the only money the station ever made.

But you're right...they have to market the sports stuff, too, as does WCER.

As noted, I have great difficulty picking up WCER even during the day here at home (otherwise known as the OMW World Headquarters, not to be confused with the Clear Channel World Domination HQ on Oak Tree Boulevard in Independence ;). I'm in basically the north/northwest fringes of Akron, far away from 900's 500 watt signal.

If I go out driving around here, I can hear WCER under a heavy blanket of static.

The web stream seems to work, so I'll fire that up Monday night and hear Mr. Burnette's debut. Does he have any on-air experience, or any media experience aside from off-air work at WOAC/67?

Re: OA, tune in...

Paging Mr. Scott Davis, the former on-camera guy most identified with the old WOAC TV 67. I think he is still wearing the old blazer with the TV 67 patch. Mr. Davis, what are Mr. Burnett's skills?

Anyway, if WCER is streaming audio, I will try to get Monday night as well.

No argument on that point..

I wonder now if WCER will now finally run the beer ads on Steelers games this fall..that would signal a real sea change if nothing else :)
