Re: Alleged New PD/OM at Mag / B / Byo
Kevin,
You are right, a lot of good people will lose their jobs, but a lot of people who had a hand in destroying radio will lose theirs too. There are casualties on both sides, but I'd rather some of the good people lose out and all the crap be dumped, because the good ones will find work again because they're good at what they do. As anyone who has read my posts can tell you, I'm a personality guy. Bring more than the "less is more" crap. Study after study, even in PPM markets, say that when you say something of "value" to your listeners, they will listen, and listen a long time. Talented people know their audience and evolve over time to keep their loyal listeners while trying to grow it from the younger demos. It's work to do that. It's not 4 and the door. It's hours and hours of work outside of the studio. In radio your job should be from the time you get up until the time you go to bed because that whole time you are living in the world your listeners are. Good talent doesn't hold jobs because they've been somewhere 30 years doing the same song and dance, and in most cases taking fewer steps just to keep a gig. 20 years ago they would have said someone doing what they did was selling out, but when it was their job on the line what did they do?
I've chosen not to work for several radio companies in my career because of crap radio. I didn't want to be on the station and I sure as hell didn't want to program one because really what are you programming? Right, nothing. It's just a title and a bunch of meetings that mean nothing but budget cuts to your end of the building. I know, I'm one of the few "old guys" left, and I'm really not that old. I just know what good radio is and believe in putting it on my station to the best of my ability and helping my staff be the best they can. If that means someone who's "paid their dues" for 30 years yet is mailing it in now loses their job, so be it. Tenure doesn't guarantee work. Ask Bret Farve.
All the best, Kevin.
