Allen, BSMW: How WEEI can improve (programming, FM)

http://boston.sbnation.com/boston-b...hub-boston-sports-radio-ratings-media-roundup

Bruce Allen looks show by show at what WEEI can do to improve (and what mistakes it made...
taking Dale off just as B's were about to go on a Cup run, bad timing...and yes, Mr Wolfe,
Ms. Kahn, and all the folks at corporate in Bala Cynwyd, PA, I offer you this snippet of
Steely Dan:

No static, no static, no static at all...F..M! (no static at all)...
Just move Mike to 97.7 and put EEI on 93.7 (not that the signal reaches everyone but it's not bad for many)

I agree with some of Bruce Allen's points, but not all. What they should do with mid-day is to not allow Mutt to speak for the first 20 minutes. That's the time that he uses to try to be funny(unsucessfully) and to try to convince the audience that he's a with-it insider(also unsucessfully). I bet that's when they lose most of their audience. I'm usually gone about ten minutes in. I keep hoping that it'll change. By the way, I've only heard Mutt on weekends on WEEI for a couple of years. Where was he broadcasting in this market for a decade?

I also disagree with his Mike Adams point. The marriage of Ordway and Holley was almost as bad a decision as giving Muttnansky a show. For the first several weeks, each show seemed to pejorate into a discussion of race, which seemed, at least to me, to be very uncomfortable, and certainly far from entertaining, for both of them. I think they brought Adams in to act as a buffer and lighten the mood.

I do think he's right about the morning shows. Good for T&R, they've done well. But I doubt if they took any of D&C's listeners, except for the listeners who listened only because they hated them and I bet a lot of them still listen.

Turning WEEI into an unmodulated carrier would be a marked improvement at this point.

"Putting it on FM" would be like spreading Grey Poupon on a plate full of steaming turds.

Mut was on the southern NH sports talk. The Jab? something like that. I think for a while he did both, weekdays in NH and weekends on EEI. And I think he was part-time at EEI for more than 2 years, but I could be wrong.

I happen to like the guy, but we've argued about that before.

I think it was The Game 1250/900 out of Nashua & Manchester, NH....The Jab (Big Jab actually) is the FM sports talker in Portland

OK. Time for another lesson in broadcasting personnel practices.

The press release announcing Brown as "Boston Market Manager" while Kahn is 'New England Market Manager' is a face-saver for Kahn.

He wasn't brought in as what they say is her "new teammate."

He was brought in as her boss.

Entercom's Boston market is WEEI, WRKO, WMKK, WAAF. The New England "market' adds stations in Providence, Worcester and Springfield that each simulcast WEEI

I'd suggest that Kahn's days running the show in Boston are O-V-E-R. She is either doing just sales managing, and I highly doubt its for all the properties, or she got a desk and a phone and 60 days.

I would think that what's happened at WEEI must have gotten someone's attention at Entercom. When faced with competition for the first time, she answered with a litany of bad decisions, each of which made things progressively worse. I assume she had final say whether they were her ideas or not. Definitely grounds for relieving her of her duties at WEEI.

I do think that going FM will help them, but that certainly will NOT be enough.

You have to jetison Dennis and Callahan. Not only are they a liability, but they cannot hang with Toucher and Rich. I would crawl back to Dale Arnold and put him and Holley up in morning drive. It'll still be a long shot against T&R, but it'll be a start. Also, break up the dynamic duo of M&M. Hire, out of market talent as well?

I can't imagine any sports show competing with T&R. Opie and Anthony would be more appropriate competition. Straight sports talk doesn't seem to do well in the morning. As Imus used to say, "Nobody is interested in what Vinnie from Queens has to say at 6:00 AM". I think that's why D&C wove in so much political stuff. I think Dale and Holley would do even worse if they talked straight sports as they did before. As for M&M.....complete disaster. Buckley, Bob Ryan, John Ryder, or Dale should replace Mutt. I think Ryan would be fantastic. Merloni , at least, has the ex-pro credential, Mutt has nothing, except a low salary.

I agree with Art. Toucher and Rich own mornings now. D+C had their chance and got fat and happy. Art's comment about Opie and Anthony is very true. In fact, when BCN was forced to get rid of O+A, these guys were the natural replacement. Even Opie said that. It's pretty clear that T+R are still O+A fans as well as Ron and Fez. They keep things clean so CBS stays out of their hair and they are getting the rating. What can WEEI do? They can accept their second class status. They had plenty of warning about the sports hub coming and had the FM stations to move thieir sports talk to. They did nothing.
