Allen Hunt is Quitting Syndication on May 31.

Syndication is a tough game. Radio takes dedication. You have to really love radio to make it your career. Syndicated talker Allen Hunt made a good go of it - he brought on veteran program director of WOOD in Grand Rapids, Phil Tower as his GM, his show stood out as it was not the typical right/left slugfest, and he eclipsed 150 radio stations nationwide in about five years on-air. That's a success story, for sure.

However, it takes a lot to crank out six live shows per week, as Allen was doing. When a Catholic organization (he's a pastor) came and offered him a job, likely with better pay and easier hours (Allen's show is late nights), he took it. Now his syndicated radio show is scheduled to come to a close on 5/31, when he will go back to doing Sunday nights on WSB FM/AM in Atlanta.

If you're an Allen Hunt affiliate, we should talk... :D

I think this is an example of a show that lacked a true identity...the show never got past that tipping point, I believe, because they didn't know where to put him. Much like Smerconish, Hunt's ideology was not polarizing enough...and, like it or not, I think that is still what attracts the listeners (if you are doing political). Or at least it makes it easier for a PD to slot you in on his progressive or conservative line up.

I don't know, I wouldn't call that many stations a failure. PD's I have talked to liked the guy's show. Sounds to me like he was burned out and took a cozy gig.

I don't think many of these were top 100 stations. Have not looked at an affiliate list but I know I did not see his name on many station web sites.

Maybe not, but if you have 100 affiliates and can't make syndication work, you're doing it wrong. I know Phil Tower, and he knows what he's doing. Sounds to me like the grass was likely just greener on the non-radio job side...
