I am severely disappointed today.

To be honest, anyone who runs their station fully automated should have their license removed by the FCC and sold at auction to the highest bidder. How is robot radio serving the community? Especially Long Island... where your stick reaches the Hamptons and Central Suffolk, a market that is growing very quickly. Earth to TMO... there are PEOPLE living in your broadcast radius. Treat them with a little respect.

Lets just get an IPOD, fill it with 200 greatest hits of all time and simulcast it on over 5000 radio stations. YEAH! That'll get ratings.

The first person to get a stick in this market and put LIVE DJ's on it and music from ANY other format then TOP 40, Rap or Light will make a FORTUNE. But you need to have the guts to sell it and give it more then 6 months to win or fail. Come on guys!!! I thought you were better then that. You break my heart.(

Give it some balls, personality, human beings, sick web site and a memorable request line. Note - KEY WORD IS BALLS!!!!! ATTITUDE. MAKE IT FUN TO LISTEN TO. Get your jocks to EVERY SINGLE event and club in the area. Seriously.. Its not like there's any competition on the streets. Look what happened to Nassau County after LIR left. You guys once had a rock network that stretched from Philly to New York. It was legendary, amazing and groundbreaking. What happened? And where did everything go wrong? Provide a valid answer and this post is just another in a string of pissed off people venting at the expense of management. However, I hope the reason isn't just "Saving money." A lot of very talented people lost their jobs today. And sadly, there aren't too many places to go anymore. Good luck to everyone - you guys are great and deserve the best treatment. May you land quickly and safely.

Who wants to make an offer and buy a station? I'm game. Now all we need is $60 million.

Andy

I can't stand it either. Can't say I'm suprised though, when TMO sold WLIR it was starting to go downhill. Even though Party was more focused on dance this summer, they still were lacking the "soul" they had when they were over at Stewart ave with WLIR. I had been hearing less of the DJ's lately. Less advertizers too, and even the signal wasn't up to snuff. The processing or whatever spatial enhancement they used on 105.3 has been toned down since last winter.
And I was suprised to see Party, nor any of the other TMO stations, were not doing any fundraising for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Clearly this company does not serve the public interest, and they made that brutally clear today. They don't even serve as a good business model either. I guess the stations were losing money. The signals were weak and spotty, even in Riverhead, Party 105 is weak in spots. The signal of 105.3 seemed strongest where there was no one, in the barrens along route 51 and rt 111 (I think the tower is around there).
107.1's signal was even weaker. If TMO has gotten rid of personalities and plans on putting cookie cutter formats on it's 3 stations, it's a disgrace. I wish we did have the money to buy these signals from them. I'm willing to donate.
Rumors seem to be saying that Party 105.3 will become top 40 (as if they're gonna even make a dent in WBLI's solid ratings and coverage). I dunno what's gonna happen with 107.1 and 98.5, perhaps one of them may get "jacked".
BTW, TMO has taken off the message boards on it's site, in order to squash any discussion. How un-American. :-(

> Hi:

As a former employee of TMO, I was sad to hear this news. I will always have fond memories of Party 105 and 98-5 The Bone. I came to Party in September 1998. That December my daughter was born. We had a lot of fun back then. I used to bring her into the studio with me as a newborn. Skyy was cool with that I think?? Sorry Skyy. I did remain focused. Party like my daughter will always have a special place in my heart. The energy and excitement that first year was amazing!

Then there was The New 98-5 The Bone. Holy Crap! That by far was the best radio job I ever had! It was fun! It was filthy! It was real and gritty! We worked hard to get that baby going. I remember many 18 hour days. I also remember having to shift gears from Morning Show on the Bone to Midday’s on Party. It was insane. This is what I will always keep in my heart.

TMO will never be a true representation of what these radio stations are and were. Hell in my opinion they bought the history of WLIR, they really didn't make the history. (some of you are pissed now, but screw you its true) To me and many others they were just the bill payers and money collectors. These radio stations were all about the people that struggled and worked their asses off to do the best radio they knew how to do. They were about faithful rabid psycho listeners that loved what we did.

TMO's decision to fire their staff and use automation was something I envisioned the day I started working on that damn automation system.(Spring-Summer 2004) I think we all knew deep in our hearts that this was the plan from the day we moved into the Ronkonkoma facility. Those that are now unemployed who were my friends at one time, I say...This sucks! I am sorry it happened.

To TMO I say good luck with your future endeavors, and thank you for giving me the perspective I have today. I left radio in July because it stopped being fun. Computers are only fun when looking at porn and e-mailing filthy messages to others, not when they are running a radio station. It's too sterile. My new career is never boring and financially rewarding. I hope that the folks at TMO read this and think about what they have done. They did everything they said they wouldn't do! Good Luck to those that fell victim to computer and be well!

P.S. Those of you that will try to defend this decision, F.U. There is no justification for this and you know it! Money...The bottom line...please!

Eric
Didn't listen to you on the Bone (not my genre) but did listen to you as FlyGuy on Party & thought you along with the rest of the staff at Party did one hell of a job at the station, just wish I could say the same for the upper levels of management. Best of luck to you in your new career.

Eric, your post is as opinionated and brutaly honest as ever. I miss your days on The Bone and Party and its great to hear that you're doing well. It seems that the TMO stations are being 'Jacked' ala CBS-FM. If that's going to be the new wave (pun intended!) of the future, I shall truly miss the personality of radio. As far as "buying the history" goes I only semi agree with you. I have been a fan of WLIR since just after the Richard Neer days. I've always felt that TMO tried to find a balance between the amazing heritage it aquired, and achieving the ratings that niche formats rarely receive. Over time, they gave up and really made a mess of things. Anyway, thats an outside observers view. Good luck to you, and send some airchecks my way if you have any.

All the best.

Interesting story that I heard from a friend of mine who has a show on a non-commercial station but also worked for the LI Press (before he and a few others from there were laid off recently)...Morey wanted to move the Press to a new, expanded space, but the deal for their new space fell through and at the same time, they managed to screw up and can't stay in Garden City either. So now, as a stopgap measure, they want to move the Press to Ronkonkoma, but that means the radio stations are getting bumped out. That's what he told me, I can't vouch for it completely but it sounds like something I'd expect from TMO.

What everyone isn't looking at, (and loving the way radio used to be, it kills me to say this), is that radio is a business. I can't blame TMO for cutting costs. If they were in the red on these stations (which I am purely speculating), they would have to cut whatever costs are possible....John is a smart businessman - he wouldnt get rid of staff on 3 stations without a good reason.

That being said, I have a feeling that being in the red is not the case, and I have a feeling I know what is happening, and I believe this will be a good thing in the end. <P ID="signature">______________

Agreed Matt, that it is a business and they have to make it work from a dollars perspective. As I said above, I've always respected and appreciated TMO's efforts at keeping its stations fresh and not cookie cutter. The balance between maintaining a heritage that wasn't profitable and increasing ratings and profitability isn't easy. Most of my posts on TMO over the years speak to that issue. You must admit however, that they have truley been all over the board with plans, changes, more changes, changing back, buying properties, selling properties, changing properties etc. I'm not just talking about their radio properties but their other ventures as well. All that said, perhaps it hasn't been directionless, but all a part of some great strategic plan. I regret the loss of the on air staff, but I hope that you're right that this will be a good thing. That said, if the plan involves automation, my MP3 player will do just fine... To me, radio is nothing without personality.
