Call me old-skool but, to hear CHR/Top40 music back on the 99.7 frequency, doesn't it make more sense to JUST CALL IT "POWER 99"? Wouldn't that be like bringing back a true Atlanta legend?
Not sure why that had to be in bold.
Calling it "Power 99" would be a terrifically bad idea. A substantial piece of Q100's listener base wasn't in Atlanta between 1986 and 1992, and the name would have no recognition with them. Plus, any recognition it has wouldn't be useful - there is zero connection between what Power 99 did then and what Q100 is doing now. Q100 is the brand they know. By continuing with the Q brand, it's the move of an existing station rather than the creation of a brand new one.
Having said that, using Q100 at 99.7 would also be terrifically bad idea. Yes, in a theoretical sense, there's nothing against calling a station Q100 at 99.7. (99.7 at one point had Lite 100 and Warm 100.) But, in this case, it would cause MASSIVE confusion.
For starters, 100 at 99.7 is a holdover from the pre-digital-tuning radio days. Even Z93 became 92.9 Dave FM. Most people don't know the history, and can't understand why a station that's on their dial at a 99 position has a 100 name. (I can't tell you how many times I would get into a car and find that the owner had set their Peach 95 setting for 95.1 instead of 94.9, despite the distortion.)
But, in this case, the more critical element is Q pointing out their new location. If they keep Q100, people will continue to look for it at 100.5. They need
something to tell listeners where to find them.
I fully expect them to use Q99.7, at least for the first few months.
/just my opinion, could be wrong
