Aloha Mix 1065?

Now that it's a private entity, CLEAR CHANNEL is putting 54 of its stations up for sale. The stations, to be put into the ALOHA STATION TRUST listed here, include major-market sticks such as WALK/NASSAU-SUFFOLK; WAKS/CLEVELAND; WJRR/ORLANDO; KSJO, KUFX and KCNL/SAN JOSE; and WWDG/SYRACUSE. ALLACCESS hears that some of these stations have to be sold within 90 days.

If they spin 96-5.....They the only rational move would be to stick KISS on 1065.....Right?

Scott, I agree that 106-5 would most likely become "106-5 KISS-FM". It's the weakest of all the CC Cleveland FM's. Weakest in ratings and revenue.

Although I wouldn't call Cleveland and Orlando "major markets". More like medium ones.

Carry on...

More like Large markets. Medium markets are usually 51-99 with 100+ regarded as small. (Majors being 1-20)

Official ARB Market Rankings:

Major Market (Arbitron Ranking 1—25)
Large Market (Arbitron Ranking 26—50)
Medium Market (Arbitron Ranking 51—100)
Small Market (Arbitron Ranking 101+)

Cleveland slipped from MAJOR to LARGE a few years ago.

When I was there, Mix DID outbill Kiss. That's been 3 years, though.

I was told Kiss was one of the biggest top 40 underachievers in CC...ratings and billing-wise.

I wouldn't call Orlando a large market but if people want to, that's fine. The #50 market has a metro pop. of just over 1 million; not exactly large IMHO.

Also, is Raleigh a "major" market? On par with NYC? I have always used the qualification (from somewhere) that 1-10 are major, 11-25 are large. 25-50 are kind of large, but I'll bet I could find a lot of people who've never even heard of New Britain, CT. How large is that?

WAKS=4.8
WMVX=3.2 is(as of spring '08) is the lowest rated CC in Cleveland second to WMMS with a 4.3.
Is 106.5 still running that "robot voice intro lady" to purposely make the station worse than it was before?(mainstream boring same 50 1990's tracks every day)?

WAKS fares better in ratings, but in revenue...its lacking!

Those are 12 plus numbers. Cosmetic. Each station's target demo is different. WMMS, I believe, has some of the best ratings in at least 10 years with the recent Spring book.

If a station's ratings are there then it's the sales dept that is lacking in not being able to turn the ratings into $$$

The biggest part of this puzzle is that Rubber City could technically come in and swoop this station up to ad to the Akron trio. It would fit, they could keep it Top 40, but add a little of the old KDD feel and flare when it was Barnstable's flame thrower and make some decent money on it.

Kiss FM is doing okay...so maybe keep it 96-5 KISS FM, Hit Music for Cleveland and Akron.

WKDD @ 96.5, under then PD Chuck Collins and imaged by TR Rezney, was a smokin' hot CHR! Sounded better than Jammin 92 in Cleveland.

I don't think that CC will give up the CHR position in Cleveland, and certainly not give away the rights to call the station "Kiss" to someone else, especially Rubber City.

Here's an interesting scenario:

CC sells 96.5 to Rubber City. Moves Kiss to 106.5.

Rubber City moves WONE to the superior 96.5 signal. CC encourages this to help split competitor WNCX in the traditional/classic rock arena in the Cleveland area. No loss of Akron listeners.

97.5 moves to all all-sports format, with ESPN/Sporting News Radio/local shows. Indians, Browns and Cavs carried on this station as well as WAKR.

The Kiss station isnt doing that well for the cluster. Even though Mix is in the toilet in ratings, the revenue is all that Bain really cares about right now. Bain needs to see the cha ching! Mix can do that for them, and it can force a thorn in the side of DOK and QAL if properly programmed. Especially with the chances that CBS will be leaving the market soon!

Rubber City has eyed 96.5 in the past. Sports on FM would be great, but its not going to fare well overall for the folks on West Market. So they have to look at what could fit them overall in the cluster. Move WONE to 96.5 might work. Then put some form of CHR on 97.5?

However this would leave Cleveland without a CHR once again. Rubber City would be smart to keep CHR on 96.5 and if you have to change the name, but for the most part, just tweak the positioning statement and start opening Akron pocketbooks again!

12+ ratings don't mean much. WMVX is still beating Kiss in the 25-54 "money" demo. CHR is a tough sell unless you're in a major market (and I'm talking top 10) where there are tons of national dollars floating around for teens and 18-34's. Yep, it's about billing and cashflow... that's the biz. You need saleable demos. And I agree with other posters.... ditch robo-voice on Mix yestereday!!!!

Thats the reason KISS 96.5 will soon be...well...not sure yet, but 25-54 they are behind Mix.

"But isn't CHR a 18-34 target, specifically W18-34, not P25-54?"

Yes.... but in a market the size of Cleveland you won't be a top biller unless you've got a very strong 25-54 component. Not enough 12-24 avails in a market this size to get you the big bucks.
