First, hi to my good friend Kilroy. I miss working with him at WLON in Lincolnton, especially during "Groovy Tunes." Boy, that show was fun to help produce and run.
I've been reading posts on the board for some time and notice that there are a lot of guys (like me) who have worked all over the Charlotte region.
In fact, I'd like to add my stations to the listings of "alphabet soup" that so many of us have went through. Here goes: WBZK AM/FM; WOHS, WGNC, WLON, WCSL AM; WHYM AM; WBT AM (Internship in newsroom, rough); WSIC AM (fill in with KR McKay when Pat Shannon still did mornings); WNNC/WIRC AM (when WIRC was still classic country); WMNC AM/FM (with Melman and Bobby T; Trading Post on weekends and fill-in news); WJRI AM (Anyone ever worked with Donnie Goodale and where is Rob Eastwood?); back to WNNC/WAIZ (took Al Mainess' place after he retired. That man knew news.); finally back to WLON/WGNC/WOHS/WCSL/WADA as newspaper reporting became my full-time career.
Whew, it's amazing I can remember all of that in almost perfect order.
I used to feel bad because I thought I had "too many jobs" in radio. I now know that it's the nature of the business, as I read Jack Armstrong's obituary the other day.
As I've worked in Lincoln County journalism for the last three years, I am now in the process of starting my own newspaper called The Carolina Scoop. My Web site should be up by April 10 at www.thecarolinascoop.com
BTW....WBZK's building in York, SC was torn down several years ago after the York VFD used the building for firefighting practice. One of the firefighters told me the station "looked like it had simply been abandoned." Records were still housed behind the production room; control room was still set-up, etc. Sad that a once proud station was reduced to being abandoned.....
That's my rant for now.....
