Alright, it's time to do a HD Multicast topic for San Diego

Since I see you all already wishing for the return of stations and such, let's go into the Multicast topic. What could fit on that 2nd sub channel that HD Radio will give us so well?

Well, here's some cookie and crazy ideas. I'm not including TJ Based stations as I do not know what Mexico's plans for HD Radio are(David, do you know if HD Radio is getting a push down south?)

88.3 II: Adult Standards FM. Why Not, isn't much of the Jazz Standards like?

89.5 II: All Classical all the time.

93.3 II: Either hip hop or Dance.

94.1 II: Return KJOY and those great soft oldies! No? You really want the Eagle? You really want the Eagle?

95.7 II: US-2, Playing your classic country favorites!

96.5 II: Jill FM, playing whatever soft hits she wants. Wait a minute, was that #27 AC Hit in 1986 really a hit?

97.3 II: Oh yeah US? Well, KSON-2 will play even more classic country hits then your $%^&&*(($#@!#@$.

98.1 II: Chill Baby, Chill.

100.7 II: Hi Star Again!

101.5 II: AAA

102.1 II Deep Tracks

102.9 II: Well, if David doesn't find good use for 102.9-2, could always revive the Beach. Playing such crap like Beach Baby, The Night Chicago Died, Magic, and other songs you never wanted to hear when they were new, so why the hell hear them now?

103.7 II Revive Sunny! Why? I don't know, just do it.

105.3 II: Hot Talk. Because Parris said it's hot.

106.5 II: Again, David has better stuff to put here, but if he too is feeling the revival train, all right, you all can have Q106 back! Just don't ask them to play rap.

Ok gang, there you go. Again, didn't list the TJ stations because they're in Mexico and I don't even know what they're doing with HDTV, much less HD Radio. Down there, the Ninos and Ninas are happy drinking and eating, they don't care about that HD Crap.

Here's what we will probably be hearing on the second HD sub channel on the San Diego-based FM broadcasters sometime in the future.

Bear in mind that HD radio will be targeted to the 35-54 demographics that are most likely to afford to purchase a radio unit capable of HD.

88.3. Main format: Traditional Jazz. 2nd Channel: Folk and bluegrass.

89.5. Main format before HD: News/Classical. Main after HD: News/Eclectic. 2nd Channel: Classical.

92.1. Main format: relay of KSON. 2nd Channel: standards and nostalgia.

93.3. Main format: CHR. 2nd Channel: Z90's R&B and hip hop format since CCSD is divesting Z90.

94.1. Main format: Hot AC. 2nd Channel: Oldies from KOOL since CCSD is divesting 99.3.

94.9. Main format: Alternative rock. 2nd Channel: Mike Halloran's experimental channel, he can play anything he wants to.

95.7. Main format: Country. 2nd Channel: Best of Tony and Kris

96.5. Main format: Adult Contemporary. 2nd Channel: Oldies from 60s and 70s.

97.3. Main format: Country. 2nd Channel: Oldies from 50s-70s.

98.1. Main format: Smooth Jazz. 2nd Channel: Classic Smooth Jazz from years' past.

100.7. Main format: Hits of 60s-00s. 2nd Channel: Jeff and Jer.

101.5. Main format: classic rock. 2nd Channel: Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw.

102.1. Main format: AAA. 2nd Channel: a resurrection of the old KKOS format c. 1990-1995

103.7. Main format: classic rock. 2nd Channel: K-Earth 101.1 from Los Angeles featuring Shotgun Tom.

105.3. Main format: hard rock. 2nd Channel: Mikey's morning show.
______________

I expect there to be some innovation, with some niche formats that no one wants to do on the "big" stations. But those formats are going to be done relatively inexpensively, because it's going to be a long time before enough HD receivers are in the hands of listeners to make those formats profitable for advertisers.

I expect some of the 2nd HD channels (and remember, there is no requirement for stations to use the second stream) will sound like the Music Choice service (all music, deep playlists, no announcers).

To little too early

Speculation aside, will you invest $500 to receive the multi-casts -- should radio stations dive in and proclaim the new frontier without a viable product?

HD Multicast may be to little and too early (technology wise): podcasting, satellite radio, the ability to record and shift a radio program ... those are inexpensive items (even with a monthly fee).

I have an HDRadio that was gently used from an on-line auction site. To get multi cast, I have to spend another $100 and send in the radio to the manufacture. What content would I get for that? Right now, nothing in the market. The content that is there, while sounding nice ... doesn't have a hook for me to make a further investment.

I really crack up on Radio Disney from la LA ... nice sounding HDRadio and yet, how many 12-year olds even know what HDRadio is ...

It's like HDTV ... big investment for those early on ..... and because the moderator will brow beat me ....

Re: To little too early

A little company called Radiospophy is putting out a unit for HD Radio that is a lot like Sat Radios... a head unit that can go from car to home to boom box. All for $270 and does multicast.

No I do not have any affiliation with Radiosophy and am not a huge fan of IBOC.

I have an IBOC radio and right now, it's a big yawn on AM; OK on FM.

Any links to the Radiospophy radio ...
______________

Do you think that IBOC radio would be capable of getting a good signal on KDIS from where I am in El Cajon? In analog (on a Panasonic Shockwave and Sony SRF-42), KDIS is pretty much completely wiped out by sideband splatter from KSDO 1130, unless I'm using a Select-A-Tenna.

You would get better results on getting Radio Disney from either a music service on cable or satellite (it's on DirecTV and Dish) or investing in XM or Sirruis. Face it, KDIS' coverage does not include Sandy Eggo, something that has been explained and told to you since the beginning of Radio-Info. Not a harsh statement to you, but the signal from 1110 is not a San Diego market station. I can barely get the station in Oceanside .....
______________

Oh, just ignore him, Chris. TFC thinks the world is going to hell in a handbasket just because he can't DX everything he wants.

Reality check, TFC: Even the FCC doesn't care.
