alright...pure dance, alternative, or country...which is back first? cd 101

pretty straightforward. I would like to htink alt. would be back first, but I'm having serious doubts if rock will ever be back. Any thoughts.

Who says that Cd 101 will flip at all? they might not have ratings but that smooth jazz format looks like an attractive demo for advertisers. Either way it would'nt be "pure dance" with KTU amd NEW already doing variations of dance that hole is sufficiently covered, before any of the dance purists come out fo the woodwork to argue thgat NEW and KTu are not really pure dance it does not matter. The audience who would actually listen to pure/underground dance are so small in number that it would not make a dent. Not everyone who goes to the clubs would listen to dance on the radio. A station like that cant survive, they have to mix in somehits even if theyre horrible remixes like the Nick Lachey remix of the ballad that he put out that KTU plays to get some cume.

TowerBuzz.....

That is something that I have to prove. It will be an uphill battle but as more members and folks find out about the coalition, the support constantly grows. We already have artists, DJ's and radio pros on our side.

A revolution is a brewin!

I don't care WHAT station it comes on...bring back currents!

Thats the thing Tony, KTu does play currents liek I mentioned the remix of Nick Lachey's take what's left of me or whatever that piece of turd is called but they play hits because a station could not survive playing only current club bangers, there is not an audience for that. If you're a club type you like to hear the music in the club, it does not have the same appeal on the radio. a seven minute club remix doesnt play the same way on the airwaves as it does in the club, on air it gets boring and feels repititious. While I applaud your efforts to keep the dance thing alive, even remember the old days of "H -H -H Hot 103" even though they played club songs on air, freestyle remixes and 12 inch versions of club songs, they still played rhythmic oriented CHR hit songs too because a playlist of just club songs wouldnt make anyone happy. OR if they did then the club kids would bitch that they werent current enough, or underground enough, or why arent they playing THIS remix instead of THAT one?.

We need an Alternative format similar to what's on Emmis station Q 101 in Chicago, with maybe a slightly harder edge. Stay in the center without veering too far off in one direction - not too heavy, and not too soft either. A good balanced Alternative with at least 40 currents, a deep library and a strong morning show can become a player in the NYC market. What are the people that are seeking this format listening to now? Not Q-104.3, definitely not Free-FM, and judging by their losses, not XM or Sirius.

As far as CD 101.9 is concerned: I actually liked this station during the short-lived New York Chill period. Wish they had continued that format - instead, now it's a boring soft rock format that masquerades as smooth jazz and plays Kenny G every 30 minutes. Why did they give up on Chill music so quickly? They really should have given it at least a year to see if it would take off or not - certainly it did not have a negative effect on the ratings.

Soul. the propblem there is that Q101 has NO RATINGS, never did, even with Mancow. Now that they're without him I dont see anything getting better if anything they will get worse. That station has hever had a presence, a personality, a profile ala Kroq LA, or even Krock, new York.

We need Emmis to bring back cutting edge dance back to the radio like they did with Hot 103. Im proud to be a revolutionary with the Metro New York Dance Radio Coalition.

And believe me for a current based dance station we aren't just LOOKING for "club bangers", not exclusively anyway. Party 105.3 (WDRE) on the island is the BEST example of what I truly believe New York dance fans want and once exposed to it, could give such a station phenomenal ratings. Sure they play current material that are considered club based to an extent. YET at the same time can be "radio friendly" if given such an opportunity for airplay. And yes, they do mix in some R&B in there. NO problem either...after all, to make the station 100 percent dance wouldn't financially work as well. Even if they play, for example, the remix of Justin Timberlake's "Sexy Back", current dance fans could accept that versus the trillionth run of "I Will Survive". Even the recurrents of Party 105 are material that dance fans could relate to since it was rather recent (about 3-6 years old on the average.)

And on another tip, I haven't been to a club in AGES but I still follow what I can and keep up. I am sure there are many others like me out there as well.

What I am doing is monumental...no question. But it is something I feel VERY confident about, as if this was my calling to do. At the very least...we have given it a shot. We're not sitting on the sidelines anymore! :)

Talking about a current dance outlet is not talking about club bangers. You're obviously not real familiar with current dance music.
Additionally Europe embraces dance music and has many stations that program current dance formats 24/7. There is no reason it cannot work here.
Alot of it is that current dance does not get much exposure in this country.
Madonna's current CD, Confessions on a dance floor, (an all dance cd) is a prime example of a cd that gets lot's of airplay in Europe but most US. stations won't touch it because they don't think dance sells... ???
We're not talking about some underground artist.

To add on to Jeffrey's argument regarding "Madonna", the song "Get Together" (the third single to come off of "Confessions On A Dance Floor") has had VERY LITTLE airplay except for the few dance stations that have embraced it. The song was NUMBER ONE throughout Europe. There was an article about this somewhere but I forget.

KNHC in Seattle has already started playing "Jump". And unfortunately, it may suffer the same fate. :(

CD does well as part of the Emmis cluster. It bills well and compliments Hot and Kiss. Demos are pretty good too. I don't know why people always write an obituary for CD.

NYC is probably the most screwed up market in the radio industry. We have two Dance stations that play practically no currents and skew toward middle-aged Females. We have a Classic Rocker, a Hot Talk/AOR hybrid, but no full-tme Active Rock or Alternative. And finally, we have a Smooth Jazz station that sounds like Lite-FM with a few more instrumentals thrown into the mix.

CD 101.9 is another station with an identity crisis. They sounded so vibrant and interesting during the New York Chill period, but gave up on it so quickly. Now they're back to the exact same format that was struggling before they went Chill. If this is what they want to do, they should just give up on the Smooth Jazz branding and call themselves an AC, which is what they really are at the end of the day. I'm sorry, but Mariah Carey and the Doobie Brothers are not Smooth Jazz in any way, shape or form, nor are a lot of the other acts on CD.

If it bills well enough to satisfy Emmis, then good for them. But there are so many format holes in NYC that need to be filled, it's ridiculous. I haven't even mentioned Country or Oldies yet...
