Alt 92.3 Music Changes

I make
This is what Corey said: “Showkiller Mike had told us for the past three or four months that he didnt think the ALT brand was working anymore. It wasn’t working, it was declining, he said, in Philadelphia, in LA. Everywhere.”

Insane accusation.

Corey was also complaining about making $134K per year doing a morning show in NYC. I guess he made the same doing afternoons.
I make $60K as a teacher with a Bachelor's that's ridiculous.

Now that the music mix is primarily mainstream rock that has aired on CHR and even A/C stations, perhaps Alt is not the best name for WNYL. Maybe something more inclusive would be more appropriate.

Why do so many of Audacy's alt stations play Nine Days' "Absolutely, Story of a Girl" ?

That song belongs on a soccer mom AC station. There is absolutely nothing "alternative" about that song.

In terms of song choices, that playlist is a near replica of 103.7 in Dallas. The songs are played in a different order, mind you.
I have not posted here in years but had to reply after seeing your post. That song was literally one of the top reasons I stopped listening. What came to my mind every time I heard it as I quickly reached to shut if off was that this is a soccer Mom station now. Since why would they incessantly play that song on an Alt-Rock station. Absolutely made no sense. It is horrible and like nails on a chalk board. This is coming from someone that likes pop-alt rock. It just does not fit any incarnation of the format and better off being used on a TV or radio commercial but certainly not played normally. If it is to get some women to tune in I think that is silly since it would be women that do not know the genre and would tune out simply thinking it was a long commercial they were hearing.

The entire reason I went back to radio was when WNYL launched with new music. Then they got away from it by incessantly playing the most tired played out alt songs like nails on a chalk board.

The alt-rock formats whether 92.3 or 101.9 did this with practically every incarnation of alt-rock and then they wonder why it fails. It always seems they get to the point where it sounds like they are trying hard to intentionally kill the format by playing worn out songs that get people to reach for their device to tune out.

They bring nothing to the table. If you are a fan of older alt-rock you are not going to listen to Nirvana's most played out songs. If you are into new rock you are not going to listen to a station that claims to be new rock but plays worn out songs from 5 years ago. If you are going to be new alt-rock then play new alt-rock which gives people a reason to actually tune in.

The problem with the new rock is that it isn't rock. It's pop emo hip hop rap hip hop I don't know what it is.

In New York City?

In any case, for radio in that market that is a terrible salary for AMD.

In LA I am used to working with talent that is in the mid-6 figures up into the 7's.

The newer stuff borrows from allot of that which is fine since at least it is somewhat all related being new music. It provides something that cannot be as easily found anywhere else. However mixing "Smells like Teen Spirit" ten times a day with that kind of new music, I just can't see how that satisfies anyone.

A lot of it actually is rock - Audacy even now is choosing not to play most of it. But we have had a lot of rock chart on Alternative this year - even aggressive stuff that haven’t made either BB or MB’s alternative charts in years.

Alternative has always been rock + extra stuff and this is the first time in a few years that the average weekly chart looks like that.

I think going with music in the mornings with traffic, weather, and news works well.
Remember that Alt list I linked a bit back? I screenshotted their morning sample hour - they do exactly what you suggest. It’s clearly music-focused with a few talk breaks scattered throughout.

EDIT: I also took a screenshot of WNYL’s sample purely for comparison purposes especially since they now without the morning show.

DC101 is the only pop-heavy "alternative" station to the best of my knowledge that earns good ratings, and let's face it - they are likely benefiting big time from the demise of Mix 107.3 (Hot AC).

The only indie-heavy alternative stations that earn good ratings seem to be in the Pacific northwest, arguably Denver, and (somewhat surprisingly) Milwaukee. X96 in Salt Lake City earns nowhere near the ratings it once did - although its most recent survey period did show a nice uptick.

The ratings leaders in the format outside of the Pacific Northwest tend to be stations with a significant guitar rock component in markets that lack non-classic Rock stations. Examples: St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Houston.

The sad thing is - there are definitely stations out there are underperforming WNYL in the AQH share department during the past 12 months. For a good example, look at Albany. Other great examples can be found in Louisville and Jacksonville.

More likely thanks to its morning show
That and/or it's heratige status.

I noticed that Alt 92.3 is now playing a LOT more '90s Alternative Rock (Nirvana, Green Day, Blink-182, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.) and a lot less of the modern pop/rhythmic-influenced stuff.

Yep that's where this thread began. Older stuff will typically help the ratings and age the demos.

I looked at its playlist today and I definitely see the earlier comparisons to PopRocks on SXM. Sadly, I’m seeing multiple spins of “The Reason” by Hoobastank today. That song is wayyy more offensive to me than “Story of A Girl”.
