ALT 92.3

I remember Z100 had a similar featured called the "Catch of the Day" around 1996-97. A number of songs that got a majority "throw it back" vote were still added anyway. But they did also add some left-field picks that got a high amount of "keep it" votes. "1 Crush" by Garbage is one that comes to mind.

I'm not questioning what you're saying about the radio format. What I'm saying is the alternative audience is perhaps the least musically tolerant of any genre. All you have to do is dig up the threads about RXP. Endless complaints about practically every song they played. It's why some programmers steer clear of the format. There's no question that you can homogenize alternative just as you can country or any other style of music. All I'm saying is there are consequences when you do it.

RXP would get it right playing a long block of Alternative then break it every hour playing one or two classic hard rock songs from the 70s. Usually almost always AC/DC and sometimes Bruce Springsteen. It was very unusual thing to do on an Alternative station to play AOR 70's once or twice an hour. Alternative rock and hard classic rock do not mix well. Today's Alternative crossess over better with Pop then it does classic hard rock.

Alt 92.3 in some ways is allot like RXP just without those glaring mistakes. The worst I have heard from them do is mixing in M&M but even M&M fits better with today's Alternative crossing over than AC/DC did with RXP.

"hip hop" like certain Eminem songs and Cypress Hill Insane in the brain fit with the alternative format, just like throwback Bob Marley does. WBMP realizes the situation that they are in with a market that doesn't really have an alternative history. I heard them play "Hypnotize" by Notorious B.I.G. Normally you would not play this song on an alternative station but with this situation in this market it makes sense for them to spike it. There is no doubt that they either get it, or they did a music test and found that song tested through the roof in their target demos.

Modern Rock or Alternative MOD 102.3 in New Haven, which launched in September and went HD and Online Only last Monday the 15th after the 102.3 translator was sold would play "Young, Dumb, Broke" by Khalid - an obvious hip-hop song.

Up in Hartford Radio 104.1 WMRQ which is owned by Full Power Radio does (or did) "Mandatory Marley" - playing a Bob Marley Song at 4:20PM Monday-Friday.
