Alt Buffalo Flips To Country 107.7/104.7 The Wolf

It offered Buffalo a "new choice for new country" and featured concert clips of Thomas Rhett, Kane Brown and the group Parmalee doing recent hits.

They will have to do a lot of outreach to get people to even venture to that part of the dial. If there had been some fans there, it would have been a good place to set up the van and give out some swag.

Fybush's gets it right. It's the Bills' universe in the 716 now through January, perhaps beyond if Covid, injuries or opponents don't take a toll on the team.

As far as "that part of the dial" goes, 107.7 is only a few steps up from 106.5; even closer to Toronto's 107.1, which is known to more than a few listeners here. But yeah, the crew at Audacy will most definitely have "to do a lot of outreach." This will be the ultimate test to find out (a) if they have a clue, and (b) if they're up to it. Townsquare isn't going to roll over.

Audacy has great resources, even if the station only has one local host. They own the rights to the Bills games. The Bills are home against Pittsburgh. They should set up the promo van in the parking lot and broadcast live Sunday morning. The country audience loves football. They need to SEE Liz in person. She should be at the game. She needs to be featured in those TV ads and anywhere they can show her. She is their main selling point.

How did that work out for Alternative Buffalo?
They had a marketing blitz and their big Summer concert. If nobody wants your product, it doesn't matter. Trying to clone WYRK on an inferior signal is absurd. Check back in a few months when it still has a 1 share or less...

Country fans are a lot more dedicated than alternative fans. People want country music, and they know Liz. It's an easy sale.
Dedicated to what?
The fact that she once worked at WYRK doesn't sell anything. SOME people may want Country music, but that doesn't mean they will listen to The Wolf. If the format stays below a one share, does that make it easier to sell? Cloning an existing format isn't working for WBUF...

I just have to weigh in on the Bisons attendance. Because of the Blue Jays playing in Buffalo for more than half of the major league season, the Bisons didn’t sell any seasons tickets once they returned here in early August. All seats are available for $10 a pop. Ticket sales for the first homestand were quite respectable. But the Bisons playing regular season games after Labor Day in September has rarely happened before. That’s why just 2,000 fans were in attendance tonight. No seasons tickets. It’s now a school night. i doubt it has anything to do with COVID. Heck, I was in the stands with 109,000 other fans at the Big House in Ann Arbor this past weekend. And Highmark Stadium will be rocking with a packed house this Sunday. It’s football season in Buffalo, and sadly, I doubt we’ll see any huge crowds at Sahlen Field for minor league baseball. Still, go Bisons! A nine game winning streak! And, yes, the Wolf should have a presence at Highmark for thus weekend’s Bills game.

It's interesting that years ago, perhaps for a few seasons, Alt 107.7 would buy a 30 second ad on the stadium scoreboard during the game. In hindsight, it didn't do much. Not that a 30 second spot guarantees an automatic 2 share bump in the Fall book. It doesn't guarantee anything, but it certainly doesn't hurt. Without question, the Wolf should have a presence at Sunday's Bills home opener and all home games; but don't think WYRK won't be lurking around the corner, perhaps at one of the satellite lots or bars nearby. Also, WYRK morning man Clay Moden is the stadium PA announcer.

When WGR and 97 Rock had the broadcast rights in the early 90s both stations were conspicuously showcased near the stadium entrances, and had an in-game ad on the scoreboard. When 97 held the broadcast rights in the early 2000's, the station was again prominently and exclusively showcased. Competing stations bought parking spaces at one of the satellite lots or bars/restaurants near the stadium as a countermeasure. Years ago, the Bills allowed for a "radio row" in the distant stadium parking lots.

There was also a time when radio stations bought aerial banners on fly-overs. Some had mini-blimps and blow-ups. Air banners around stadiums became tightly restricted after 9/11. The famous Goodyear blimp also made several appearances during the championship years of the early 90s. That was always a sight for kids and adults, especially when it was lit-up for night games.

For the record, the Wolf ran a 30 second ad on the stadium scoreboard sometime during the second half of the Bills-Steelers game. The crowd was so loud at that point, the audio couldn't be heard. But it looked pretty slick, for whatever that's worth. I wonder how many fans even noticed. Even during a time out, there's stuff to watch on the field, and there's always drama in the stands.

But you're saying Liz wasn't there? Totally wasted opportunity.

Was Liz part of the ad, or did they just play a montage of today's biggest country stars. The same ones they play at WYRK?

Give me a reason to listen. You have ammunition, and you're not firing your gun. Why even hire local talent?

Coulda been somewhere in the vicinity, but I didn't see her. She wasn't part of the ad, which appeared to be boilerplate: slick, but the same old "today's biggest, brightest, boldest, bestest, yada, yada, yada."

Just goes to prove that - as previously discussed - this station is nothing but a flanker. There's no effort to make it more than that.

Then why spend the money on local talent? They could easily pipe in the morning show from NYC.
Agreed it makes no sense in this case. Even with automation, they need a few bodies in the building. Maybe she's responsible for the Public File...

Close.
2022 is FCC license renewal year for broadcast stations in NY state.
Hiring a woman, especially a talented woman, doesn't hurt.
