Alternative in Philadelphia

104.5 in Philly just went from Spanish to Alternative. What will this do to G-Rock in western Monmouth and their southern coverage?

I will reserve passing judgment until I listen to the station for long, but the first impression was not good - Hinder's "Better Than Me" was the first song that I heard. Redneck bands may work well on Alternatives south of the Mason-Dixon Line, but hopefully this group of morons won't become one of the new 104.5's core artists.

Whether or not they challenge G Rock in NJ depends on what direction they take. If they execute an inferior version of what G Rock does, they won't do well in the rimshot areas. However, if they are more aggressive with the new music and play some edgier bands, they can build their own niche audience. I'm very interested to see how this all plays out. This was a long time coming - Philly really needed this since Radio One pulled the plug on Y-100. Now I have three presets on my FM dial (G Rock and NJ 101.5 are the others).

Well so far it sounds like the old Max 95.7 which took a small bite out of Y100 (but not much). These Alternalite stations keep coming around in Philly.

How far into Monmouth/Ocean does the signal penetrate?

All of Ocean, except the far northeast portion of the county, and all of Monmouth west of US 9. One of Philly's stronger FM's around here.

For significant ratings purposes, hardly at all.

My thoughts exactly. Not only does it not penatrate enough, but since they will most likely not be marketing to Monmouth/Ocean at all, 95% of listeners won't know it exists.

The 104.5 signal overlaps the 106.5 signal in it's entirety. There's nowhere that can get 106.5 that can NOT get 104.5.

But, will anybody know it exists? Aside from possibly a few commercials on Philly TV (not a given), I would assume there would be no marketing that reaches Monmouth/Ocean whatsoever. A few diehards will find it through word of mouth, but 95% of the potential audience won't even hear it.

Point well taken. When I actually hear someone listening to a Philly station here, I'm always surprises. Ocean County from Toms River north is very NY centric these days.
That said, I'm glad that rumba nonsense is on 1480 now and something decent is back on 104.5. I know it's there ;)

People will listen to what they can hear..marketing or not. There are spots in Monmouth County where New York, Philadelphia and local stations are equal in strength. I heard a listener on Wired 96.5 call in from Manalapan the other day.

After a week, we have a feel for the direction that Radio 104.5 is going in. Of course, this may change over time with the addition of on-air personalities.

G Rock and Radio 104.5 sound very similar - they must be using the same consultant. I would give G Rock a slight edge because they're somewhat more willing to play lesser-known titles. Radio 104.5 are more willing to play harder music than G Rock, though it comes up infrequently (Korn, Papa Roach's "Last Resort", Staind's "For You"). While they do play a good amount of songs that you won't hear on G Rock (Bloodhound Gang, Oleander), I have to take off points for the fact that they play even more Mullet Rock than G Rock does - they play Nickelback, Hinder, Daughtry, and Evanescence gets played constantly. I thought G Rock played them too much, but this is ridiculous. And yes, Evanescence are Mullet Rock - they have more in common with '80s Heart than any Gothic Rock band out there.

Of course, I expect gradual changes from Radio 104.5. G Rock may be changing for the better as well, with their willingness to play Tool (twice last night, and as far as I know it had nothing to do with concert tickets). It's good to have options in Monmouth/Ocean for a change - I remember when all we had were countless variants of the Adult Contemporary formula and dinosaur rockers.

You can't pick up WPRB (103.3) over there? I'd think you'd like the indie rock programming they air most days after about 1 p.m. Or is that a little too out-there for ya, with all the Lightning Bolt, Dalek, and Squarepusher type of stuff? I can't get WPRB in Newark due to interference from KTU, but when I listen whenever drive south of New Brunswick on the Turnpike, all the way to the Del. Mem. Bridge.

From the way you describe 104.5, I imagine Philly-area listeners who enjoy WPRB will not tune in to 104.5 very much. Frat rock... bleh.

Also, can you get 88.5 from Philly over there? I don't listen to them a lot, even when I'm in range, but they seem to have gotten a smidgen harder (well, for an AAA anyway) over the past few years.

And what about WMCX? I can't get 'em up here, so I don't know what they actually sound like....
