Alternative Rock Is Returning To The Gump

This info was extracted from b'5 awesome web site: (Montgomery TV and Radio)

The Tiger is back in Montgomery
July 5th, 2010 • Related • Filed Under

Thanks to an anonymous tip we learned today that Montgomery will regain The Tiger…at 93.9 now though. Here’s the article:

TIGER COMMUNICATIONS Alternative WTGZ (95.9 THE TIGER)/AUBURN, AL will flip frequencies with sister Classic Country WQSI (93.9 THE EAGLE) on JULY 12th. Longtime TIGER COMMUNICATIONS show “SPORTSCALL” will stay on 93.9 THE TIGER in the afternoons from 4-6p.

THE TIGER PD KEVIN JACKSON told ALL ACCESS, “We’re definitely excited about the move, as this will help us be more of a force in the MONTGOMERY area instead of just hitting parts of the area. We believe MONTGOMERY will love being able to pick us up consistently as well.”

As a result of the change, there should also be some more adjustments to THE TIGER lineup that will be announced in the near future.

So for all 1% of the Montgomery audience out there craving a “alternative/modern rock” format…Tiger Communications is serving it up on 93.9 soon. Keep listening. Not sure of the logic of keeping the sports show on 93.9, disrupting the afternoons, but then again, guys love sports too I suppose.

I don't understand how they are returning to the Gump... Is WQSI on a translator I don't know about? The 93.9 signal isn't very strong in the area from what I recall.

They could be referring to the old 104.9(?) translator that WTGZ used to air on in Montgomery.

I remember Tiger being on 104.9 but I don't recall 93.9 ever putting a signal of any usefulness into Montgomery... So unless something has changed that I don't know about, I don't see how they can be returning on a signal that's barely better than the 95.9 signal was.

For what its worth, I've never snagged Greenville's nor Tuskegee's 95.9 in Montgomery--they seem to cancel each other out nicely. 93.9 has come in marginally via a stock car stereo, but not enough to attract more than a few tenths of an Arbitron rating. So their bragging of Montgomery coverage (distant to East Mtgy., fringe toward Prattville according to Radio-Locator) is definitely stretching it.

Didn't WQSI start life as a Class A @ 94.1?

Answers to bunches of questions:

Actually, WQSI started out as a class A at 100.9 FM in Union Springs years ago with a faint signal. When WALX upgraded, WQSI went off air for several years before returning at 94.1 when it was co-owned with Tallassee's WACQ before its sale to Tiger Communications. Since then, the power and transmitter upgrade to 93.9 took place.

Also, the classic country format of 93.9 has been rebroadcast on the 107.1 translator (formerly very briefly as a second translator for WACV) for the last several weeks, although it is most prominent in southwest Montgomery, probably where the 93.9 signal is weak but so is the target audience. The 93.9 signal is decent over the eastern side of Montgomery (at least grade B east of the bypass). At night, the surrounding 93.7 stations in Birmingham and (lesser so) in Dothan are as strong if not stronger on the fringes of town which don't help listenability much. And when the fog machine rolls at night, Biloxi's 93.7 and Pensacola's 94.1 mixes in as well on occasion to squeeze 93.9

Since 93.9 has been wishy washy on their format, switching between 90% classic country to 10% classic country to every percentage in between in no definitive order, they aren't going to infringe on the Gump's two country powerhouses - and there is minimal interest in the Sports Call show in Montgomery proper. We'll see if the "new Tiger" improves matters and or ratings much.

I live on the East Side (represent!) of said Gumpville, I don't pick up 93.9 on seek.

Unless they plaster this town with billboards, nobody will find it.

The 104.9 translater is owned by Kathrine Haggler and run by Bluewater with an Oldies format.

Well, it will all work out. I guess what Montgomery lacks in Classic Country fans, Auburn/Opelika makes up for with Classic Country fans.... and in 5 months they will have one more fan to add to the list ;)

Does anyone think that Tiger Communications may somehow bring both WQSI and WTGZ via translators to Montgomery?

Breaking News!!!

104.9 The Gump
July 28th, 2010 • Related • Filed Under

Thanks to several anonymous tips we learned today that Montgomery is truly getting a New Rock station courtesy of Bluewater Broadcasting.. THIS IS CONFIRMED and your gonna like this, it’s going to be called 104.9 The Gump. I am 100% confident that this is the only station in the USA that is called “The Gump”…it is uniquely Montgomery. The big day is coming up soon, this Friday, July 30 so make sure you are tuned in around 5pm to hear the flip.

The new web site is still under construction but is already online – http://1049thegump.com/. The station will be streamed soon on both the station web site and the community portal www.buzzmontgomery.com.

The jock situation is wide open and I am sure we will hear more soon about this.

Personal opinion…this could seriously cause a few ripples in Montgomery. Whenever one flips, everyone else has to react. The Stroh stations I would think are the most likely ones to flip…we will see what happens.

Now that Montgomery has a rock station…what is that you want to hear on the station? Any opinions?

This info was extracted from b5's awesome web site.

P.S. Hope the new sounds of 1170 AM and it's 104.9 FM counterpart will have success and work out.

From the 'About Us' page of 1049thegump.com :
“The Gump” is exactly what this town needs. There are more than 50 licensed radio stations that reach Montgomery – and none are playing New and Alternative Rock. (Except one, but they’re over in Auburn and too busy talking…)

Finally, you don’t have to sit through your Dad’s Rock-N-Roll collection to hear the good stuff.

Coming out firing!

I'm surprised it took that long for someone to use that nickname for a Montgomery-based station, frankly. Country, rock, CHR, or urban--any of these could've pulled 'The Gump' name off.

It's definitely a bit of brilliant marketing, and it's a name that is pretty much guaranteed to not be used anywhere else. ;)

Thanks for the kind words. There's been so much talk about a whole generation (or two) abandoning radio. We began to wonder if we broadcasters weren't causing that ourselves with all the "library" formats. The Gump sure makes Classic Rock (even mainstream rock) sound like your "dads" radio station! Hey the music has changed too. Alternative has gotten much more accessible. We'll see how it's embraced. So far, so good.

To borrow a catch phrase from the Atlanta Board but with a few changes:

How will this affect 95.1 The Fox?  :D
