Alternative to Lost 45's... FOUNDCUTS debuts tonight on 93.7 Mike-FM

Oh My God, they've got to do something!!!. They say they play everything? They don't!!
Yesterday on my way home from work I leave Ashmont area in Dorchester (I listen by MP3 Walkman) where in that area 93.7 doesn't have the best signal, especially around JFK Train Station area, forget it!!
Anyways, I had many choices such as Magic 106.7, Mix 104.1, Kiss 108, and some of the Pirate Stations that you can ONLY hear in that area (Big City 101.3)
But I chose to listen to 93.7 Mike FM
BIG Mistake!!!
All I heard yesterday (May 24) afternoon was Rock and Roll music. Everything I heard was Rock and Roll music from 1980s, and 1990s. The only good song I heard was "Alone" from ?? Heart?
Everything else was all Rock and Roll music
There are a lot of good music out there, Jennifer Hudson has some good music out there. Why not play some of that, or some new Charlie Wilson, he has some good new music out as well as Freddie Jackson. Mix 104.1 and Magic 106.7 can also play those as well
They got to do something, add more music!!!

As I've said before the We Play Everything nickname is a gimmick, and they are basically a rock/pop
station with a few oh-wow-that-was-interesting cuts thrown in. They are appealing to a certain demo; some people who might not necessarily change the station if something like rap/R&B/soul
comes on but they won't go deep into it. Yes, they may go offbeat once in awhile and play
Johnny Cash or Tony Bennett or something but they are still mostly focused on rock/pop, etc.

A look at their recent playlist: Warrant, Bob Marley, Huey Lewis, Adele (never heard of her),
Sugarhill Gang, Simply Minds, Shaggy (to me, that's a character on Scooby Doo), REM, Journey,
Grand Funk, DJ Kool, Van Halen...Thomas Dolby, Eurhythmics, Sublime, Men at Work...

It looks like pop/rock based 70s-90s and the most recent decade. What's missing? A lot of the type of music you seem to like; folk; blues; country (even on that list it was just about impossible to
find); 50s oldies; alternative; reggae other than the occasional Marley chestnut; and so on.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Benatar, REM again, etc. So much for "We Play Everything". They don't
seem as narrowly focused as some stations but they aren't as wide as one would expect either.

Now go to the Ratings section of radio-info and look up Boston. They are 15th overall--
and note that they are classified as "Classic hits". Not variety hits. Check out the numbers over the past few periods. Not bad, and they're low budget. They are counting the money at Entercom because it's a station appealing to a pretty popular demo.

Entercom's stations, last ratings period under 6+
WEEI--8th place
WAAF--14th place
WMKK--15th place
WRKO--17th place

If they were slightly higher, WMKK would be the second most popular Ent. station in town (in
that category)

And I don't even know the 25-54s but for all I know they could be even higher.
For a low budget station that lucked into a popular format, I wouldn't expect changes anytime soon. I suppose you could call or email them and urge them to add the artists you mention.
Maybe they would. But they may fear audience tuneouts if they substitute these artists
for the ones I mentioned. Yeah, maybe these artists could help the station, who knows.
Tell them that and see if they respond.

And there's a good reason why you heard a lot of rock and roll music. The We Play Everything motto is a gimmick. You heard rock and roll music because by and large, they are a rock and
roll station.

i just have a question,is this the best ratings that they have ever had??? like is it better then star,or when it was hits of the 70's and how can we find this out!!

I didn't mean to say a bad thing.
I mean, for a station that says they play everything, (Four) Rock and Roll songs in a row doesn't cut it.
They did play Bob Marley, some old tune. I forgot which song.
After that
guess what kind of music they played?
Another Rock and Roll music.
There are a lot of good music out there, mix it up a tiny bit more if you ay you play (everything)
I do listen to them a lot just to see what I'll here
They recentlt played an old song "Shut Up You Face" an old Itilian American song that I still have on a record at home. Funny song
They also played the whole song (theme) from Welcome Back Kotta. That's the only station in Boston that I know of that play these two songs. That's why I listen to them to see what they will play next.
But yo
after yesterday
Add some more variety for their station

Trying to find old ratings info for Star; I did find out that Star changed to Mike on 4/14/05. I don't
know if Star's ratings were higher than what Mike is doing; probably not.

http://www.reference.com/browse/Hd+star

>> This (Star) format, however, didn't catch any fire in the Arbitron ratings. However, on January 19, 2006 they would bring the format back as a HD2 subcarrier...On April 14, 2005, WQSX became the current WMKK. Inside Radio, a radio industry publication, released information that had this change not taken place, Infinity Broadcasting ...reportedly would have transformed either WBMX or WZLX to Jack FM on April 15.
-------------------------------------------------
(I had thought WODS might have been the target for a "Jack"?)

Oh no LAURO I know you don't mean to say a bad thing, but I'm just saying that when they say We Play Everything, it's a ruse. I used Mike's website recaps of its music from this morning to see exactly what "variety" they have. When they play Muddy Waters, Kenny Chesney, The Irish
Rovers (OK maybe on St Pat's Day they'll do "The Unicorn"), Doris Day, The Dead Kennedys,
etc., let me know. So much for "We Play Everything".

It's a rock station, don't be fooled. SOME R&B/rap type stuff like that Hollaback Girl song or
In Da Klub, etc.

Shaddup You Face was a novelty song by Joe Dolce that hit the charts in the 80s. Welcome Back
was a #1 hit by John Sebastian of Lovin' Spoonful fame.

Shaddup You Face video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFacWGBJ_cs

WMWM had that album. I used to play a cut off it called Ain't No UFO Gonna Catch My Diesel.

A lovin' spoonful of John Sebastian

Again, if you'd like to make a change, get together with some people who agree with you and
express your concerns to the prog dir. Start up a facebook group, get a big petition going;
heck, how did Steve Leveille get his job back? If there are enough people that want that type of
music, have them get together and make their point.

Emails, phone calls, letters, etc.--public opinion can be swayed. It's a longshot but how else
can one do it? (Other than perhaps winning Megabucks and buying the station...)

Getting the thread somewhat back on subject...

Dave Newfell said:
...I have a lot of respect for the show you do Barry... I wish you continued success and feel there is room for "alternatives" as this string suggests. I think both of our programs provide relief from "the same old same old" and have that goal in mind... we just take different scenic roads to get there!

And even if "Foundcuts" or "Lost 45's" occasionally plays songs that many are actually familiar with, not a big deal, as it doesn't (or shouldn't) take away from the main concept of the show as a whole. I'll admit, even my "Cellar" program will semi-often play such songs... but as Dave says, it's just a different path - but if it leads to an entertaining journey, so be it! ;)

thank you all for your good words and advice. I did email their program management personel quite a few times and gave my ideas to them. One time about three years ago, the program director of 93.7 Ron emailed me back and thanked me for my ideas and told me at that time they have no plans to change their station.
They know more what they are doing.
Mix 104.1 is great as well as Magic 106.7. For example. Look at Magic 106.7. They advertise their station on almost (every) MBTA bus. They are a AC station. They used to play (Freddie Jackson) music "You Are My Lady" He has a great new song (well, now-Latest) "I Don't Want To Go" why not add that to their rotation. Look at the cities these buses are in (Roxbury, Dorchester) Majority of people I see in those areas on the bus are (Besides American) On the bus, in those areas I see African American people 90% and Vietnamese people 10%
So since they're advertising their station in those cities, why not play some new Freddie Jackson, some new Jennifer Hudson music, new Charlie Wilson music. I'm not saying change their format. This past Sunday morning I heard Sade new song. Why not put that in their rotation? There are so many new AC music out there as well as Urban AC music out there. Boston is a diverse city.
One of these stations have to do something. Add more music to their playlist
It's not for me.
Most times I listen (not by choice) on my weekday job, they have Magic 106.7 on. We have no choice. On my free time, I mostly listen to them, Mix 104.1, Mia 1430am, 93.7, 850am, 680am, and 105.7
It's not for me.
It's for the people who see that ad, who say to themselves, "Hey, I might check out Magic 106.7 when I get home"
and BAMM!!!
There's a new listenner. For that new listenner, why not play the music that cater to them? Think of where your ads are and cater to those listenners as well. Don't leave them in the dark. Yes, Magic 106.7 does play a lot of Motown which is all good.
When I was in highschool (1990-1994), I listened to four stations. I mostly listened to KISS 108, and W I L D, I also listened to Magic 106.7 and 94.5
Back then, Magic 106.7 played great music, Johnny Gil, Amy Grant, "Give It To Me One More Time" By Lionel Richie, great song, PM Dawn, and "Cry For Help" By Rick Astley to name a few. It'd be nice to hear those songs again as well as some new Jennifer Hudson, Kirk Franklyn and Freddie Jackson.
Anyways, thank you all for your advice and good words

Lauro: That's why some people are tuning standard radio out. Small tight play lists. Also they seem to sound alike, to me anyway. I don't know what type of sound system you have on your home computer, but there is a world of alternatives to listen to. Here's a sample: WRRK HD3 "Bob's Malt Shop Oldies" pre-1964. WDAS HD2 Soft R&B. WLTJ HD2 Urban. KPLU HD2 Jazz. All available on Radiotime.

thank you @Jimmy128.
I don't have a computer at home, my cell phone is pay per and very limited web access (can not look up radio stations)
I do know WDAS. I used to live in Trenton, Nj for about a year. During my stay there, one of the radio stations I used to listen to was WDAS
As I said, it's not for me, it's for those who see the ad on the bus, and like to listen and ....
Anyways today on Magic 106.7, I heard Billy Ocean "Get into My Car" from 1987. I havn't heard that song in so long. I was 12 years old when that came out. Magic is sounding ok, but like 93.7, (In this case) Magic played two Reggae songs (played two songs apart) why not play ??? "My Love Is For Real" by Paula Abdul instead of playing two reggae songs back to back. There's a whole lot of great music out there. Or why not play Fantasia new song? Tank has a new song, it's a remake "I Can't Make You Love Me" why not play that on Magic 106.7 They play the one by Bonnie Raitt a lot, why not play the new one by Tank. That one sounds great? If I can work at Magic 106.7 or Mix 104.1, even 93.7 in Program Management department, their station would be the best station in the world, everyone would listen because of the best wide variety. I'd take those stations to the next level!!!

Lauro: I fully believe that you would be a better programmer for those stations you mentioned. It's sad today that radio is owned and programmed by big corporations that care very little for the average listener and all you get are the same songs. It wasn't the same years ago.

It is the "average listener" that the big corporations are programming for. You and Lauro represent niche audiences.

I tuned into Found Cuts and found it enjoyable. Of course I will still listen to the Lost 45's as well.

Funny story about Brand New Key by Melanie, a old friend of mine in Missouri said that the Oldies station played that song all the time. I surely would not mind hearing it more here.

Miss Safka appreciates the kind words I'm sure.

As for the Lost 45s, the show jumped the shark when we started to hear television themes and, frankly, while I appreciate the work that goes into them, I'd rather here the "oh wow" songs than interviews with some guy desperately trying to rekindle what's left of a career on the Topsfield Fair/Hampton Beach Casino/Holiday Inn Lounge circuit

How were they able to get such an ancient TV set on a turntable like that?

I'm assuming that these "themes" didn't chart at all as singles?
