Altoona-Johnstown Where Are They Now?

whoever the pd was should have airchecked peg corran and her WIYQ insight segments. the empheyzema she suffered with came through a little too much on the phone feed.

harlow, please post these 1987 ratings for us all to see. the radio rich reels fed backwards into the automation could have been a ratings boost. or ax-swinging penny mock doing mid-days.

yikes

:D :D You are good Jack! You remember all too well! Those were the days. LOL

The insight segment was part of the required PSA agreement. I am thinking we slowly phased that out when going live.

I also remember walking into the back room where the "Robot" was when I first started there and hearing the music going backwards. That automation was a "work of art".

Can't make a call on ratings when I was there. We had just switched format and it was too early to tell. I do know people were listening as you would hear it in stores, etc, and we did get requests. Lets say it did better then when it was automated country.

There was another format tweak under Harlow after I left, he will have to give you the numbers.

theres an old allegheny mt netwok story claiming that the company put a respiratory therapy machine for peg right beside the record player with the penny mounted on the tone arm. as nu shooz 'i cant wait' played on the harlow morning show, ken clapper administered therapy as helen walker made croissants.

peg died 2 weeks later and jim novak played an hour of anthrax on the metal show as harlow ate cheeseburgers.

LOL

You HAD to HAVE worked there to know all this! LOL!

PM me your real info. Thanks

I believe the airshifts were;
6-10 Walko
10-2 Ted, or Joan, or whoever was around at the time
2-6 Me
6-10 Gene Bennett (Mitch then took his place)
Overnights- Rob Diehl, Jimmy Novak, or whoever else was around.

Matt Swayne, Shane Fedeli, and a few others I can't remember also there at the time.
Also, on my shift (2-6), it was simulcasted with WTRN as the AM13/Music99 show.

just think of me as 'the insider'. i love to pontificate on old central pennsylvania radio stories. the IYQ era is one of the most intriguing forgotten times of local radio.

jimmy bryan was on the verge of stradom THEN BAM.........MR SIMPSON SWINGS THE AX and the whole station is satellite EXCEPT FOR JO JO'S POLKA SWING.

As I remember, Bud Dwyer had just blown his head off, Dirk Van was promoted at Mutual News, and Penn State had won the national championship. (RADIO RICH had sold lots of sponsors and the game hissed on GMR.)

John Harlow was devestated. Not only did he lose his station BUT SOMEONE BULKED THE HARLOW-LUYAH MORNING SHOW CART!!!!!!

What might have been if that ill-fated ax hadnt swung in the summer of 87!!!!! And yes Harlow was correct, it was partially the sales managers fault for writing fake accounts. I SAY ITS THE POWER OF PENNY MOCK...THE ONCE PROUD WINDBER PASTOR. HE STILL HAS THE FINAL COUNTDOWN 45 IN HIS CELL. HE LIFTED IT UNDER WALKERS EAGLE EYE.

i'LL HAVE MORE INFO LATER!!!

Good story Jack. That was all after I had left, although I vaguely remember Jimmy Bryan. I think he use to come in and hang out around the station.
I can tell you all the stories about the Triumph that sat on the side of the TRN studios though and some "Wild Bill" shenanigans. ;)

Seems odd, as Ted and Cary said I was the PD, the record companies had me listed as such, the Power 99.1 letterhead did too as I still have some in the footlocker, and Cary and Bill Moses use to meet with me on all changes

Whaddya know. I was just digging in my old "radio footlocker" and found a few of my old Music 99.1 business cards that have printed Program/Music Director on them and an old AMN monthly newsletter that that says I was made Program Director at WIYQ .

Wow, proof in the pudding even after all these years! ;) ;D

It has been awhile, but the last time I knew,

Stan Potopa- Running his own karaoke/DJ show.
Bob Abernethy- Selling advertising for Forever in Huntington
Lou Maierhofer-Renting tower space for cellular/two way systems.

And as far as Chuck Bloom, I have not heard anything about him since back in the 80's when he was a DJ for WVAM.

It might be a good idea to place Chuck Bloom's name on the "Pet Patrol" if any stations still run lost dogs, cats, etc. It's a great public service. In fact, that's where I got my ferrot you see inside my fry wagon. Hot summer nights all you need is a good whiff of the grease and stale odor of the ferrot!

I remember to this day, some 30 years later, when Chuckels Bloom was the News Director at WHUN in Huntingdon and he was covering a teachers strike live from the scene. He reported, "Here is an interesting sign, it states bored with the board, that's B-O-R-E-D with the B-O-A-R-D." He then went on to explain the difference in the two spellings and what it likely meant. Talk about painting a picture on the radio. This was a working man's broadcaster as he carried lunch to work each day in a black, metal lunchbox. One of the best!

attention Mr. All Nite Satelite...contact me privately as I have another Bloomy story to share but it is rated R for R-bald and I don't want to offend anyone...especially the moderator of this board who is a little bit to the right of Gabriel Heeter.

To the person inquiring about Dave Gionfriddo(Banks) Dave owns the Thirsty Dawg Taverne in his hometown of Patton. He still lives in the Altoona area and as far as I know still runs the "Dave Banks Road Show"

All great memories on this thread. I worked the Altoona market from 74 - 83 in radio and Channel 10, moved to mornings at WMAJ (Majic 1450) in late 83 until late 84, moved to KACE in LA in 84 for a few months before I realized I was in Hell, then went on to Johnstown to Bobby Hamilton's (KEARTH) WCRO which went bankrupt in 86. Jack Michael's hired me for Afternoon's at Key 95 from 87 - 95 when I also started several businesses.Consulted cable clients for 20 years part-time (Semi- retired) and landed a gig with Atlantic Broadband when they started up in 2004. Started High School Game of the Week on Cable in 2000 and launched a morning show on Altoona/Johnstown cable channel 9 this Monday (June 1) from 6 - 9AM. Its fun again!
A Big Hello to all you dudes and ladies who I came in contact with me during my career. I'm indebted to you all!
Stay Blessed!

Steve Austin aka Greg Banks

Good to know all is well Greg. Wish I could catch your cable show, but no longer live in the area.
The days of good old radio are like some of the past dj's like John Harrison (John Smith),
long gone! It is a shame how radio is now.

OK LETS GET FRY STRAIGHT. WE ALL KNOW WHO THIS GUY IS. IT;S SEAN MCKAY. JOHN PRICE WAS HIS FRIEND, NOW DEAD, WHO HAD A FRY WAGON FOR REAL.
